PP and Citizens approve an initiative to promote the inclusion of Mount Miravete in the Regional Park of Carrascoy and El Valle (29/11/2018)

The Plenary has approved to request before the Autonomous Community the inclusion of Monte Miravete, with the possibility of adding also the Altaona and Escalona mountain ranges, in the Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Park.

The proposal, presented by the municipal groups of PP and Citizens, is based on the fact that this environment has natural values comparable to that of this protected natural space and, with its incorporation, it will be possible to implement a greater environmental protection and to manage in a homogeneous way the set of the pre-coastal sierras of the municipality of Murcia.

Mount Miravete and its surroundings, with heights reaching 426 meters above sea level, is known for being an imposing watchtower towards the Huerta de Murcia and its city and, at the same time, towards the south, giving sight to the lunar landscape and the SPA.

This enclave stands out for its environmental, landscape and cultural values, among which are:

It is part of the ZEPA territory.

The present avifauna is very varied given the mosaic of existing environments in these spaces: owl, owl, small owl, blackbird, turtle dove, wood pigeon, common kestrel, partridge, etc.

It is one of the densest areas of owl (Bubo bubo) on the planet and hosts other predatory species of high environmental value present are the Bonelli's eagle (Hierastus fasciatus) or the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

Wild flora of interest: although the most representative forest formations are the pine forests, there are singular plant associations adapted to the salinity conditions of these soils, such as Quebraollas (Ononis tridentata) and other plant species that form habitats of community interest very rare in the European context.

Other existing species of the typical understory are palmitos, honeysuckle, juniper, albaida, rockrose, lastón, rosemary and thyme.

In the areas of ramblas and more humid we can observe oleanders, elm, limelight, etc.

Ancient mining activities and gypsum kilns, whose remains represent a great educational and cultural resource for environmental education activities.

The old cattle roads, that is to say the cattle trails, run through these lands, the most important being the Cañada Real de Torreagüera or the path of the Puerto del Garruchal.

Regarding the group of mammals, prey species such as rabbits, hares, field mice, etc. stand out on the one hand.

Among the carnivores, the marten, weasel, genet and even the wildcat.

They stand out for their interest at European level the bats, a group of little known mammals but that reaches to reach 15 different species in this zone, linked to the caves and entrances of the past mining activity that now serve as refuge for these animals.

The proximity of Mount Miravete of the city of Murcia and districts of the east makes it a very popular place for citizens to go hiking, biking, etc.

It has an extensive network of roads and trails that facilitate the practice of outdoor activities and the observation of flora and fauna.
