The Aecc invites the people of Murcia to participate in the solidarity march for melanoma research this Sunday (27/11/2018)

The Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, along with the President of the Aecc Murcia, Manuel Molina Boix, the Institutional Delegate of Iberdrola in the Region of Murcia, Patricio Valverde, and the PhD student in the group of 'Immunity, Inflammation and Cancer of the University of Murcia 'Irene Pardo Sánchez, today presented the march' Aecc en Marcha ', whose objective is to raise funds for this research project of the UMU.

The march will take place this Sunday, December 2, at 9:00 am from the Plaza de la Cruz Roja, and the income obtained will go to the research project 'Towards precision medicine in melanoma: identification of new prognostic markers and development of new drugs', by the researcher Irene Pardo Sánchez, which takes place at the University of Murcia.

"The Spanish Association against Cancer is the leading institution in the fight against this disease," said Felipe Coello, who added that "in this initiative he wanted to unite people and institutions, involving the public administration and the private sector to put it at service of the research potential of the University of Murcia and its project on melanoma, a disease that every year about 160 new cases are diagnosed in the Region of Murcia ".

The march will start at the New Bridge, next to the Red Cross Square of the Murcia capital and can be done running (10 kilometers) or walking (5 kilometers).

At the end of the test the participants will be able to enjoy the leisure area, information booths, tasting area, live music and giant paella in the adjoining Chinese Garden.

Registration is done at the headquarters of the Aecc Murcia or compralaentrada.com.

The first 2,000 have benefited from a discount, costing the number € 7, the following will pay € 10.

In addition, the first 4,000 registered will be entitled to their corridor kit composed of backpack, shirt and bracelet in addition to their bib number.

The remaining participants will have a dorsal and bracelet of the test that will give access to the tasting and play area.

All funds raised will go to the research grant for the project 'Towards precision medicine in melanoma: identification of new prognostic markers and development of new drugs', developed by Irene Pardo Sánchez whose objectives are the following:

Generate models of zebrafish that present unique advantages to study the impact of inflammation and oxidative stress on the progression of melanoma.

Understand the role of DUOX1 and XDH in the inflammatory response and oxidative stress in the development of melanoma.

Understand why the genetic alterations in DUOX1 and XDH are associated with an unfavorable prognosis in melanoma patients.

Identify pharmacological inhibitors against DUOX1 and analyze the effect of pharmacological inhibition of DUOX1 and XDH on the progression of melanoma.

The results will allow the development of personalized treatments for patients with genetic alliterations in DUOX1 and XDH.

Skin melanoma is a very aggressive form of skin cancer that is generated from a type of epithelial cells called melanocytes, which are responsible for producing the melanin pigment that protects us from the damaging effects of solar radiation.

A year ago around 5,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Spain, with a prevalence of 120 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The percentage of survival depends on the type of melanoma.

If it is a localized melanoma, survival is 98.4%, however, if metastasis occurs, the percentage of survival at 5 years drops drastically to 22.5%.

Aecc, more than 65 years of experience against cancer

In Murcia, more than 7,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2015, about 20 per day, with more than 60,000 family members involved in the problem of diagnosis and treatment, increasing the number of people who will need help to cope with the oncological disease.

During 2016 these figures have increased more than expected and the causes that oncologists consider are the increase in alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

The Aecc in the Region of Murcia, has attended during the year 2017, through support programs and accompaniment to the sick person and their families, more than 2,000 cases, increasing the funding of these programs.

It has a psychological team that helps patients and families to cope with this disease, which was increased with a new Social Worker and a new psychologist in 2017. This program has hospital volunteering at the university hospitals Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia and Saint Lucia of Cartagena.

In addition, it has volunteering at home and testimonial volunteering to support cancer patients.

In 2017, within its awareness and prevention program, it has held more than 20 conferences and a series of free workshops to promote healthy living habits and improve the patient's life.

In addition, more than 40,000 mammograms have been performed on women in the region, 38,000, for the breast cancer prevention program of the Ministry of Health, with the AECC also being one of the architects of the creation of the colon cancer prevention program. .

In Murcia several social projects have been started to help people and families to which the cancer disease has put at risk of social exclusion, being awarded the "Territorios Solidarios 2016" prize promoted by the BBVA entity.

The Aecc in Murcia will finance for 3 years, a grant worth € 40,000 per year, € 120,000 in total, for the project of Dr. Mª Dolores Chirlaque, which investigates Bisphenol-A (BPA) as xenoestrogen and cancers related to reproduction (testicular, prostate, breast, uterine, ovarian, etc.).

To this scholarship it is necessary to add two new pre-doctoral scholarships granted this year with a value of € 220,000 distributed over three years, which consolidates the aecc as the private entity that contributes the most money to research.

In the Region of Murcia, the Aecc has modern facilities, inaugurated in September 2010, at Miguel Vivancos Street, number 5, and with more than 80 local meetings spread throughout the regional geography.

It has more than 1,000 volunteers and 7,000 members.
