- Alicia Morales points out that "the 'metrominuto' can be a good instrument to make visible and promote this new model of urban mobility that we defend, focused on the pedestrian and the promotion of walking to extend healthy practices and build cleaner and more sustainable cities"
NOW MURCIA proposes that Murcia design and elaborate its 'metrominuto', a map that seeks to promote mobility on foot and a 'walkable' municipality.
The 'metrominuto' is a plane that measures distances between several points and the average times it takes to move around them, with the aim of drawing pedestrian itineraries in the cities with which to promote mobility on foot.
It can be done in different formats, such as paper brochures, a downloadable mobile application or on physical media in different parts of the city.
The councilor Alicia Morales explains that the initiative arose in Pontevedra and is being extended and implemented in many Spanish and European municipalities.
The idea has received various awards and mentions (by UN Habitat, DGT, CERMI or the FEMP) and is being promoted within the framework of the Cities Walking Network, to which the City of Murcia must be in the process of accession after the motion of Ahora Murcia approved unanimously last March.
The elaboration of the 'metrominuto' will also be presented as a motion by the municipal formation, in the plenary next Thursday.
Morales emphasizes that "one of the biggest challenges we face in the cities is the transformation of the current model that gives all the protagonism to the car to another that focuses the design of urban mobility on pedestrians, bicycles and transport public".
To do this, "experts and administrations agree on identifying basic measures that need to be put in place, such as pedestrianization and restriction of private traffic, promotion of public transport, promotion of the use of bicycles and vehicles that do not pollute, or the creation of of dissuasive parking networks, all of this to fight against air pollution and acoustics and to protect the health of citizens ".
The mayor also recalls that "administrations must ensure safe, accessible and effective travel to all residents." In this sense, the City of Murcia has a lot of work to do, especially in the districts and the routes between them and with the peripheral neighborhoods ".
"Our City Council should take the initiative and put in place imaginative measures that promote awareness and change of mentality in citizenship," says Councilor of Now Murcia, "transferring to our municipality good practices that are working in other cities. , we consider that the 'metrominuto' can be a good instrument to make visible and promote this new model of urban mobility that we defend, focused on the pedestrian and the promotion of walking to extend healthy practices and build cleaner and more sustainable cities ".
