"There is a lot to do when it can not be cured" (14/11/2018)

The chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Monsignor Renzo Pegoraro, gave the inaugural lecture in which he focused on fragility and death

'Frailty makes us strong' is the motto chosen for the celebration of the International Congress of Palliative Care that welcomes today and tomorrow the Catholic University of Murcia, organized together with the Pontifical Theological Institute John Paul II and the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The acts have been developed in the Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, full of students and assistants related to the area of ​​health and care of people.

At the inauguration José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM;

José Manuel Lorca Planes, Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, and Monsignor Renzo Pegoraro, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Life, who gave the inaugural lecture on Fragility and Death in the Doctrine of the Church.

For Renzo Pegoraro, palliative care is an issue of importance for all of Europe, and has indicated that "it is essential to have good medicine at the end of life."

Also, during his speech, he has encouraged doctors, nurses and health personnel who deal with patients close to death, to be able to give a common response.

On palliative care has indicated that it has been slow to work with them.

"Specialist intervention medicine emerged very quickly, and nevertheless palliative care has arrived later", he affirmed, but he added that in recent times an attempt is being made to give a stronger impulse.

For his part, José Luis Mendoza recalled that from the UCAM "we defend the culture of life against the culture of death that is being promoted in many sectors of society, we are against euthanasia, to eliminate human life This is an immorality and an injustice, and he has indicated that "we have a moral duty to take care of these patients, and palliative care is an extraordinary instrument".

Suffering and illness

Monsignor Mario Iceta, bishop of Bilbao and president of the Episcopal Subcommittee for the Family and Defense of Life of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, spoke on the day of the morning. He spoke on the accompaniment of suffering and illness.

Monseñor Mario Iceta has stressed that ten years ago there were 500,000 homes in Spain with only one member, and currently 5 million, so in this regard has indicated that "our great social drama is loneliness."

He also affirmed that "pain puts you in a new way and with it you can grow as a person".

Presentation of the project 'Last wish'

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 15 will begin at 10 am with the presentation of the project 'Last wish', by Manuel Pardo, co-founder of the Ambulance Foundation of the last Wish and vice-dean of the Degree in Podiatry of the UCAM.

Next, the third and final session of the congress will be held, which will focus on the challenges of medicine, ethics and pastoral care.

Health professionals specialized in palliative care will participate, as well as experts from the Catholic Church on this matter.
