In addition, the last two years the University has increased its research production even more than the 400 articles published in journals indexed in JCR
The Catholic University of Murcia works to enhance the dimension of social responsibility of research, that is, to be an element that solves real problems of society;
for this, year after year it has been increasing its investment in research.
According to the IUNE ranking - which analyzes the research activity in the Spanish university - the UCAM is the third private university that published the most scientific articles in 2016 (252), only behind the University of Navarra and the Ramón Llul.
In addition, analyzing the percentage growth in number of publications in the last three years analyzed (2013-2016) the UCAM was the one that had a greater increase (61%) while the other two did it in 9% the R. Llul and by 0.6% that of Navarra.
The UCAM is also the one with the highest growth (54%) in terms of research productivity (number of scientific articles per professor), when the evolution in these three universities is analyzed during that same period (2013-2016), with the purpose of relativizing production according to the size of each institution.
Also, it should be noted that in the 2017-18 academic year (period not yet analyzed by the aforementioned ranking) the research output of the Murcian institution has increased again, surpassing the 400 articles published in indexed journals.
Highlights the line of work led by the Professor of Biology of Development Juan Carlos Izpisua, world leader in the field of regenerative medicine, who published the past course 11 articles derived from research projects promoted and funded by the UCAM in scientific journals of greatest global impact (Nature, Cell and Science).
It is also important to point out the success of the researchers of the institution in the Call Challenges-collaboration of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities 2017, in which 100% of the requested projects were achieved, for a total amount of more than 2 million €
The most outstanding research of the UCAM has been published in scientific journals such as Cell, Nature, Science, Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), Scientific Reports or Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA), among others.
Regarding the doctoral theses registered and defended in the UCAM, its increase is highlighted, passing the latter from 29 in 2015 and 76 in 2016, to 173 in 2017.
Investment in quality research
The funds raised for research in national and international competitive calls and contracts with companies are more than 17 million euros.
The Vice-Rector for Research of the institution has 194 active projects today: 157 contracts with companies, 15 national and regional competitive projects, and 24 international projects, plus those of the Industrial Doctorates close to thirty.
Some of the projects of greater relevance and investment in which the University works are in water decontamination, new drugs against cancer or Alzheimer's, blood pressure, overweight, prevention of diabetes or in insect meal.
Promote in Spain the transfer of knowledge in health, sports and nutrition
In addition, in its commitment to quality research and promotion of innovation and knowledge transfer to the productive sector, the UCAM is working for the launch of a center for entrepreneurship and innovation in health, sports and nutrition - High Technology Incubator in Health, Sports and Food-.
The University has received in the INCYDE 2018 call in competitive competition regime, 1,397,265 euros of FEDER funds for the execution of this project, aimed at promoting the economic transformation of the Region of Murcia towards smart growth, based on knowledge, as well as to encourage the improvement of competitiveness and modernization of the incubated companies through the promotion of innovation and the transfer of technology to them.
Internationalization and knowledge transfer
The mobility of teachers through programs of stays abroad configures another key aspect in the training of researchers, allowing teachers to establish collaborations and permanently update their knowledge in highly competitive universities and research centers.
We must highlight the stay during this course, the director of the Chair of Research of Water of the UCAM, Javier Senent, at the University of Texas A & M, thanks to the prestigious program of scholarships for Spanish doctors Fulbright, which this year have been granted only to 11 Spaniards, being Doctor Senent the only one of the Region of Murcia selected.
Also, Professor Pedro Emilio Alcaraz, director of the Center for Research in High Performance Sports, has developed a stay at the Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth (West Australia), through the program for young doctors 'José Castillejo', in where he has worked on a project, led by the UCAM together with FC Barcelona, related to injuries in the ischiosural players.
