The Faculty of Nursing of the University of Murcia has opened on Tuesday the Laboratory of Clinical Simulations, which will allow the students of the degree to practice real situations with a mannequin capable of reproducing human behavior.
It is a training method in which knowledge, skills and human factors are intertwined so that those who study the degree in Nursing can train before dealing with real patients.
The simulation laboratory, inaugurated by the rector, José Luján, has a briefing room, where the students know the clinical case they must face and the guidelines to execute it;
the control room, where the symptoms of the patient are handled and the advanced audio and video system is controlled;
and the simulation room, where the simulation itself is carried out through a mannequin that responds to the physiological changes of the patient according to his clinical picture.
Cesar Leal, professor of Nursing and promoter of the project, explained that "the integration of the simulation in clinical practices is an innovation that improves the quality of teaching, since it integrates learning through the experience of students in real clinical settings with These simulations are perfectly complemented, and sometimes this methodology makes it possible to experience situations that students can rarely experience in real practice and with a leading role ".
The methodology that the Faculty of Nursing is implementing implies that it is a group of students that poses a clinical case to their classmates, who face simulation.
At the end of the exercise, together, they obtain from practice those issues that have been solved well and those that need improvement.
It is a circular learning methodology.
Since the beginning of this course, third-year students are using the laboratory.
David Armero, dean of the Faculty of Nursing, has made clear during his speech the satisfaction of the staff of the center for having completed a project much desired by all and that will mean a leap in quality in the training of students.
Ana María González Cuello, director of the Department of Nursing, has assured at the official opening that the goal of the Faculty is to expand the laboratory with another simulation room and continue to improve in this teaching methodology.
For his part, the Rector Luján has made special mention of the fact that the simulation room is a project that reflects the effort of many people to improve the quality of teaching.
For the rector, "the success of this room that we inaugurate today will be when a student of the University of Murcia is working in a real situation and does his job well thanks to what he has learned here".
The vice-rector of Health Sciences, Luis García-Marcos, was also present at the opening ceremony;
the vice-rector of Planning and Infrastructures, Belén López Morales;
and the Vice Rector of Coordination and Welfare Affairs, Paloma Sobrado.
