The dual career model for athletes of the Catholic University of Murcia and the European project 'ESTPORT' to transfer it to universities in other countries were recognized by 'European Athletics' in the category of 'Innovation' of their annual awards
The Swiss city of Lausanne hosted the great celebration of European athletics in which 'European Athletics' awarded the best of 2018. The Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) was awarded in the category of 'Innovation' for its model of tutoring to athletes that allows them to combine their sports career with higher education.
This work was exported to universities in the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece and Malta through the European project 'ESTPORT' (Development an innovative European Sport Tutorship model for the dual career of athletes).
For this reason, Antonio Sánchez Pato, Dean of the Faculty of Sports of the UCAM, picked up the award with Emanuele Isidori, from the Foro Italico University in Rome, one of the institutions that formed part of the work carried out from 2015 to 2017 in the project of the European Union.
After collecting the award, Sánchez Pato highlighted the fact that the Catholic University of Murcia is already recognized and even awarded in major international events: "It has been a great boost for the work done by the UCAM on the dual career supporting student athletes Right now we are a reference thanks to the sponsorship and promotion of sport but also for our research work and the academic support we give to athletes. The model of the UCAM inspired by José Luis Mendoza has achieved a penetration in the sports field that goes beyond the academic and that reaches the federal level and the practice of sports itself ".
In addition, the dean of the Faculty of Sports, had the opportunity to share with great sports legends such as the double Olympic champion Sebastian Coe, who transmitted "a great interest in our project." There is a concern for the training of athletes and that It is very important and they themselves have transmitted it to us in this gala, Sportsmen from other countries have told us that they did not have the opportunity to train while they competed despite being from countries as developed as Great Britain ".
Great champions in the ranks of the UCAM
The model of the UCAM allows elite athletes to study without giving up their studies.
