In this edition, the Murcia institution has opted to show women who are at the forefront of high-level research
Actively research so that it reverses in improving the quality of life of people.
This is the goal of the Catholic University of Murcia, which is reflected through the stands and activities that the institution has taken to the street to mark the Science Week, which is held from today and until Sunday at the Botanical Garden of El Malecón (Murcia).
"The UCAM has turned to research, and has made it, along with quality and excellence, its fundamental objective," said Josefina García Lozano, rector of the institution, during the opening of the exhibition.
He also recalled that this year has been committed to show women who are in the front line in research: "The University has always supported the important role of women in society. The number of women in positions of responsibility in the UCAM It is high, above the average of any other university institution, but we want to continue working constantly and awakening vocations, and universities play an important role in showing what these young women's futures may be. "
90% water decontamination
One of the novelties presented by the UCAM in this edition has been a laboratory scale prototype for the cleaning of emerging contaminants in water, such as drugs and personal hygiene products, over 90% in just 15 minutes.
The prototype is developed by the University itself within the framework of the European project `Life Clean Up ', and it is a first step for a next prototype that will be placed in a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Region of Murcia.
The model has a cyclodextrin polymer installed which, as the water passes, retains the emerging contaminants.
According to José Antonio Gabaldón, one of the main researchers of the project, the conventional treatments applied in sewage treatment plants can retain between 40-70% of emerging pollutants, which means that small traces remain. concentrations, hence the importance of this research that will address a real problem that purification stations have.
