The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today presented the opening acts of the new pedestrian axis Alfonso X El Sabio (Phase I), which will be held on Saturday and will feature different groups of Murcia culture, who will go out to the street to fill the new avenue of music, dance, painting and children's theater.
The event was attended by the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, the mayor of Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, and the general director of the Institute of Cultural Industries and the Arts, Marta López-Briones.
"The city of Murcia gains 7,600 m2 of pedestrian area open to all, and we want to celebrate it with a wide program of activities open to all, which will take place in the morning and in the afternoon, with live performances including classical music, medieval pieces , contemporary pop-rock themes, Murcian dance, activities for the little ones and live painting exhibitions ", said José Ballesta, who informed that" musicians, painters and dancers will take this new pedestrian axis of the city to celebrate artistic talent Murcia ".
José Ballesta expressed his satisfaction at the fact that this new avenue is the first one of the municipality "entirely Murcian".
"Both his project, which has been drafted and directed by architects and municipal engineers, as well as the companies that have executed the work, all the furniture -designed and executed by Murcian companies-, the materials used, which are our land, as well as the trees and native vegetation ".
Phase I of the avenue, from Santo Domingo to Jaime I, will host shows and artistic exhibitions throughout the whole day of Saturday.
From 12 to 14.00, the Discantus Choir, the Plectrum and Guitar Orchestra of the Region of Murcia, and the Compañía Murciana de Danza will perform.
There will be a first pass from each group and, upon completion, a new full pass will be made.
In addition, throughout the morning, ten painters and illustrators will recreate the atmosphere of the walk in front of Las Claras, performing live painting.
Children's entertainment shows have also been organized for the little ones.

At 7.30 pm the lighting of the lights will take place, with the 'Anthem of Murcia' in the background, which will be heard through the loudspeakers incorporated in the lamps themselves.
The play of lights with different musical pieces will continue until 10.00 pm.
A wide and luminous walk of natural stone
This new big boulevard in the heart of the city will incorporate more than 14,000 m2 of new pedestrian surface, since this Phase I will add the 8,000 m2 of Phase II, from Jaime I to La Circular, whose works have already begun with the previous actions of sanitation.
Phase I of the new Alfonso X opens to Murcia as a wide and luminous walkway equipped with natural stone pavement, which incorporates 32 new orange trees and 11 palm trees that add to the dozens of existing trees.
In addition, the itinerary has a bicycle lane, urban street furniture and new intelligent street lamps, all with 'Murcia stamp'.
The works carried out include the recreation of the approximate layout of the old wall of Murcia.
In this Phase I, 29 street lamps of 6.5 m and 4.5 m have been installed, equipped with LED lighting (with capacity to illuminate in five different tonalities), which also have built-in speakers that allow the emission of music and sound for cultural shows.
The urban furniture is completed with the installation of a Led panel that offers information in real time.
Reference axis in the historic center
The intervention involves the creation of a pedestrian itinerary in the historic center of the city that connects La Glorieta with La Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X;
a large reference pedestrian axis that, when completed, will total around 50,000 m2 (an area equivalent to 5 football fields).
Limited traffic: less noise and pollution
The project gives priority to the pedestrian, so it includes a semi-total pedestrianization of space that restricts vehicle traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in a regulated schedule, circulating in a single direction towards Santo Domingo by the west road, the existing one next to the church of Las Claras.
This reduces environmental and acoustic pollution, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new spaces for public stay and walk, reducing noise and pollution.
An avenue that will tell the story of the Medieval Murcia
The project of integral pedestrianization will be a reflection of the history of the city and will include elements and spaces dedicated to the Medieval Murcia, a configuration that will allow you to get closer to the life of the protagonists of the time, such as the monarch that gives its name to the emblematic Avenida , Jaime I or the King Wolf.
Participation, a key pillar
Participation and transparency have been the key pillars in the elaboration of this process, which has incorporated the proposals made by neighborhood communities, political groups, the Ecologists in Action Association, the College of Architects and other individuals, seeking their conciliation to enrich the performance, as well as the report of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and the contributions of the College of Architects.
This operation will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for sustainable growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Murcia IT Strategy: Innovation + Tradition.
