During the year 2018, Aguas de Murcia has undertaken a campaign to prevent the laying of eggs of the common mosquito and tiger mosquito in the 9 storm tanks of the sanitation network of Murcia, and if necessary, eradicate possible outbreaks of adult population by natural insecticides.
The mosquitoes lay their eggs in permanent water accumulations where they hatch and develop until they complete their cycle and emerge as adults.
The genus Aedes, popularly called tiger mosquito is known to need less than 1 cm.
of water to complete its larval stage.
Therefore, the storm tanks of the Murcia sanitation network represent an ideal habitat for the development of this type of pests, as there are sheets of water and moisture along with the nutrients that may favor the development of the larvae.
To avoid this, from July to October every two weeks and after episodes of heavy rains, the municipal company has carried out the following treatments:
To avoid the appearance of mosquito foci, a silicone-based liquid has been applied on water surfaces, which changes the surface tension of water and prevents the mosquito from laying eggs.
In those facilities where outbreaks of mosquitoes have appeared, treatment with natural pyrethrins has been carried out to reduce the adult mosquito population.
In both cases, products have been used that minimize the impact on the environment, with no damage to the crops or to the associated fauna in the adjacent ecosystems, both in the terrestrial and aquatic environments.
For the development of this campaign, LOKIMICA Laboratories SA has been contracted and is also responsible for the municipal mosquito control campaign, with specialized personnel, as well as Aguas de Murcia's own personnel to supervise the tasks performed in the different facilities.
