Next Friday will take place 'Climathon Murcia 2018' simultaneously to the main cities of the world.
For the third consecutive year, the City Council has adhered to this international marathon of ideas that aims to respond to the challenge of building a carbon-free economy.
Among them, it will be about the measures to increase the coolness zones in the city, minimize the risk of floods, water scarcity or how to face the new public health challenges such as the tiger mosquito.
Next Friday is the appointed day for cities to debate and give a complete overview of the challenge of urban adaptation to climate change.
This event, framed in the Climathon global event, is the largest event in this field to promote entrepreneurial ideas that seek to protect the environment and fight against climate change.
Murcia participates for the third consecutive year.
In the past editions, the Climathon focused on students and entrepreneurs contributing their ideas and their vision of what the city of Murcia would have to be in the future to increase its resilience in the face of natural catastrophes, cope with water scarcity and rise of the temperature.
The best contributions became part of the document of Measures of Adaptation to Climate Change of the Municipality of Murcia, a prelude to the Adaptation Strategy that is to be presented to citizens.
On this occasion, the challenge posed by the Climathon is to disseminate and transmit to Murcia the measures that need to be put in place to face the impacts derived from climate change.
Among them, for example, measures to increase the freshness zones in the city, minimize the risk of floods and water shortages, prepare society through training and awareness programs, face new public health challenges such as the tiger mosquito vector of infectious diseases, allergies and prevention / warning against extreme weather events, the value of the garden and decarbonization of the city, acting on mobility, reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy.
The day will discuss the commitments made at European and national level on climate change, and the keys to the new Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition prepared by the government.
Murcia, a pioneer in the development of its strategy
The role of local administrations will be addressed to shape the cities of the future, highlighting the business role in climate action and business opportunities through the participation of the Cluster of Climate Change.
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Garden, Antonio Navarro, will present the work done by the City of Murcia in the development of the Adaptation Strategy of the Municipality, Murcia being one of the first Spanish cities that has this planning tool.
Finally, municipalities such as Alicante, Elche and Murcia will share examples of good practices on climate change adaptation in relevant areas such as health, the use of reclaimed water and the prevention of avenues through floodplain.
The day, which will take place in the Hall of Acts of the Almudí Palace, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., has been organized through ALEM, the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change of the City of Murcia.
Registration is free until full capacity is reached, and can be done through the following link: Registration to the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy day or through the website: www.energiamurcia.es
