The University of Murcia welcomed Patricio Valverde on Monday as the new doctor honoris causa of the teaching institution in an academic ceremony held at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Patricio Valverde, graduated in Chemistry from the UMU in 1973, becomes part of the faculty of honor of the University at the initiative of the Faculty of Chemistry, with the support of Veterinary and Biology, who wanted to recognize with this distinction the contribution that Valverde has made to the business innovation of the Region at the head of the company Estrella de Levante, of which he was general director between 1998 and 2018.
Professor Fuensanta Máximo, in charge of doing the laudation of the new doctor honoris causa, has highlighted as part of her long list of merits Valverde's constant effort to save water in the company's industrial processes to reduce the water footprint and its bet on the qualified training of workers, example of which was its commitment from the first moment for the training model of dual vocational training.
The new doctor has sincerely wanted to acknowledge all those who have made it possible and has said that he understands "not only as an acknowledgment to my person, but also to what
which I represent as an Murcian entrepreneur with an innovative spirit, a student of this University, which has been the University of Murcia for more than a century. "
Valverde has dedicated his inaugural speech to develop the idea of ​​eco-innovation, as the axis that should mark the present and the future of companies.
Valverde, currently Advisor for Development and Infrastructure of the Autonomous Community, has made a thorough description of this concept that seeks to optimize the energy used in production processes to reduce the environmental impact of business activity.
But eco-innovation, Valverde explained, is also a tool to achieve greater competitiveness of companies.
Valverde has also highlighted the importance that new technologies have in this concept of eco-innovation, allowing, for example, that the traceability of products is constantly recorded throughout the process, a growing demand from citizens, committed with environmental sustainability.
The new doctor honoris causa has called for the need to "value the university-company relationship through collaborative framework agreements to foster the innovative and enterprising spirit in the early age of university education by creating a model of Dual Training Academic".
Patricio Valverde has finished his speech affirming: "These are the reflections of a veteran entrepreneur, based on experience and transmitted today to this audience, within the framework of this emotional act for me, with the hope that they will be echoed by all those who have the vocation to open the way in life through the adventure, as complex as it is exciting, of entrepreneurship "
For his part, the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, said in his speech that when the Cloister, the highest organ of the University, decided to appoint Doctor Honoris Causa to Patricio Valverde, "he considered the extraordinary work developed by the new doctor in Estrella de Levante, of which he has been General Manager for twenty years and the main person in charge of the transformation of this emblematic company ".
Luján has conveyed that, given that Valverde is described as "chemist and innovator", the distinction received "is also a tribute to the hundreds of chemists who, coming out of the classrooms of the Chemical Faculty of the University of Murcia, have been, continue to be and they should be even more so in the future, very prominent protagonists of the economic and social development of our region. "
The rector has welcomed Valverde to the faculty of doctors with these words: "Dear Patricio, your example of work, leadership and vision is a gift for the University of Murcia."
The president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, has closed the act of investiture affirming that "the cloister of the University of Murcia could not have made a better choice because (Valverde) is an example for the university and also for the world of the company".
López Miras, who has defined the University of Murcia as "the greatest center of knowledge and talent in the Region" and has been convinced that "it must be closely connected with the company to facilitate this transfer of knowledge and turn them into practice and business success that, in turn, will be progress, development and employment for the Region.
