Seven out of ten graduates of the University of Murcia get a job after finishing their studies (17/10/2018)

Seven out of ten graduates of the University of Murcia (73.8%) of those who perform an active job search after completing their studies are working.

This is one of the main conclusions included in the report The labor insertion of graduates at the University of Murcia, a study that has analyzed the employment status of the promotions that completed their studies in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 courses.

The report, made by the Service of Orientation and Employment of the University of Murcia (COIE) and sponsored by Banco Santander, was presented this Wednesday in Convalecencia in an act chaired by the rector, Jose Lujan.

The 3,470 graduates surveyed grant an average of 3.6 (on a scale of 1-5) to their degree of satisfaction with the degree taken at the UMU, this satisfaction being higher in the case of those who have studied qualifications in the branch of Sciences of Health and Engineering.

The report also shows that most of the graduates of the UMU, 73%, choose the career, mainly for vocational reasons.

The most common situation among those studying a degree in the area of Arts and Humanities, where the vocation reaches 86% of cases.

Regarding access to the labor market, most of the respondents joined the labor market once they finished their studies and got their employment in private companies by sending the curriculum.

However, one of the highlights is the large proportion of graduates in the area of Engineering who joined the job market before finishing the degree, specifically 51.4% of graduates in the promotions studied.

With regard to the conditions of work accessed by those who hold degrees at the University of Murcia, 40% get an indefinite contract, the same percentage reflected in the previous edition of this study.

The data that does vary is the one referring to the working day, since the percentage of part-time contracts has increased since the last report, reaching a figure of 31.4%.

The people surveyed perform mostly technical occupations in their jobs, so there is a high degree of correspondence between the training received and the work they carry out;

something that they value very positively, as well as the adequacy of their professional category to the employment contract they have.

The graduates also recognize a high demand for professional skills in their last job, such as the capacity to solve problems, the need for lifelong learning, the ability to assume responsibilities or teamwork, among others.

Hence, graduates show a high level of satisfaction with their employment, which happens in 68.6% of cases.

This satisfaction, however, is greater in regard to the functions and content of the performance and better in what refers to the level of compensation.

All the labor insertion data presented by the COIE are accessible through the website of the Employment Observatory of the University of Murcia.

The rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, has highlighted the importance of the work carried out by the COIE for the job placement of students and the value of reports such as the one presented so that the University can continue to improve in the public service.

Luján explained that in each faculty "the result of insertion and what is happening with their studies will be analyzed and they will see if it is necessary to take some kind of measure".

The rector has stressed the need to be permanently alert to changes in the labor market.

Antonia Martínez Pellicer, director of the COIE, has highlighted as the main value of the report the exercise of transparency and social responsibility that implies the fact that any person can access the labor insertion data.

The act was also presented by Severa González, director of the Employment and Training Service, who has congratulated the University for the work done and has drawn attention to the fact that most of the graduates are satisfied with the training received , which, "should be a source of pride and satisfaction for all those involved in the process of training students".

Juan Manuel Núñez, Director of Institutional Banking in Murcia of Banco Santander, the sponsoring entity of the study, has reinforced Banco Santander's support for the work of the universities.

The Rector Luján thanked the work of patrons of the entity, both in this and in many other university areas.
