Senator Francisco Oñate values the utility that still has the biggest dam and qualifies as "moral damage" the two years that have piled up the ashlars of this infrastructure, which is a Historic Monument and Property of Cultural Interest
The Municipal Socialist Group is pleased that the Senate has approved this morning a socialist motion, which calls for the urgent repair of the historic monument of La Contraparada.
The socialist senator for Murcia Francisco Onate describes as "moral damage" the two years that have accumulated the ashlars of the dam and blames the delay to the neglect of the previous president of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura.
In his speech, remember that, although it has instrumental value as a point of distribution of water for the irrigation of the garden, it is much more important its historical value for being the work that allowed the birth of the Huerta de Murcia and the populations settled in she.
Hence their current qualifications as Historical Monument and Cultural Interest.
The senator also explains that this infrastructure dates back to its origins probably to the tenth century, in the time of Abderraman III.
And that, although it has undergone transformations, it is still used today with the same fundamentals of those times.
"Thanks to La Contraparada, we were able to build a network of channels, 510 km long, which starts at the major irrigation ditches and ends at the hazards that return unused water to the river," he says.
It was these works that allowed the transformation of the Vega del Segura from the swampy area to the orchard.
In the 13th century, more than 4 hectares of irrigated land were already counted, more than 10 in the 17th century and up to 15,000 in the 70s of the last century.
"It is true that, at present, it is in sharp decline as a result of urban pressure", he points out.
This flood was affected by the avenues of December 2016. The poor conservation of the channel caused all the water of the flood to flow into a single point "with such force that it managed, incredibly, to uproot the ashlars of the dam, large stones. volume that left their seat to be piled up in the middle of the monument, "says Oñate, who adds that" only from negligence can be understood that two years later follow the piles of stones causing material damage, but also moral and pedagogical damage, since the enclave is a very visited place, often by groups of schoolchildren to whom we are giving a show of carelessness of the heritage that we must raise to protect ".
It also notes that, "for greater negligence, it should be remembered that those avenues had aid from the Government of Spain, aid that was not used by a court war between the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and the Junta de Hacendados, which they decided at that time public disputes for other reasons and wanted to transfer their particular disagreement to the punishment of a historical monument. "
For all these reasons, he declares that "today we want to express our satisfaction with the impulse that, from the Senate of Spain, is given so that, with urgency, the works of restoration of the Main Azud are carried out between the Confederation and the Board of Landowners".
