The small building was built at the end of the 18th century in the Baroque-Rococo style and is the only one standing of the fourteen stations or steps of an old via crucis with beginning and end in the nearby church of Santiago
The Commission of Education and Culture of the Regional Assembly chaired by the Deputy of Citizens, Juan José Molina, has approved an orange formation initiative so that the hermitage of the Steps of Santiago, also known as the hermitage of Salitre, be declared a Good of Cultural Interest.
PP and Podemos have supported this initiative, while the PSOE has voted against this proposal.
Molina has shown his surprise at the attitude of the PSOE that he has described as inexplicable "since they had submitted an alternative text requesting that the file be opened for the declaration of Cultural Good, and instead voted against our initiative in which we requested that the file and subsequent declaration of Cultural Interest Asset be initiated, for which reason we believe that they have voted against because they do not agree with the name of the property, showing that they care more about the name of the hermitage, protection something that seems unheard of. "
During the debate the socialist deputy Emilio Ivars has publicly acknowledged that he does not know how to distinguish a church from a hermitage.
The small building popularly known as the hermitage of the Steps of Santiago is the only one standing of the fourteen stations or steps of an old via crucis with beginning and end in the nearby church of Santiago.
It was built during the last third of the 18th century in Rococo baroque style and preserves in its exterior declaration the typical rockery so characteristic of the style to which it belongs.
Molina has indicated that it is necessary to recover this hermitage because it is in a state of absolute neglect for many years.
"For a time it served as a refuge for squatters and indigents, which put their integrity in danger, because on several occasions they set fire to the belongings that were inside, which motivated the municipal services to cover their entrance, with what the humidity inside it is accelerating its deterioration ".
"For the artistic and historical value of this chapel that is part of the monumental baroque fabric of the city of Murcia we believe it is important that the relevant mechanisms are activated so that this property is declared of Cultural Interest as soon as possible", has finished Molina.
The hermitage of the Steps of Santiago, or hermitage of the Salitre consists of three differentiated parts: the cover with lintel access in whose attic a Latin cross is framed by a triangular pediment;
a small ship covered with two waters and the apse, of hexagonal plant, higher than the nave, where six openings recercados of pebble decoration in color siena are opened, which provide light and fan to the interior.
The nave and the apse are covered with green glazed cloth.
