The president of the Community, Fernando Lopez Miras, affirmed today that the Murcian cyclist Alejandro Valverde "achieved last Sunday that one and a half million Murcians felt proud of their region, and that millions of Spaniards were also proud to be one".
López Miras made these statements during the official reception of Alejandro Valverde at the Palacio de San Esteban, after the Murcian athlete proclaimed world cycling champion on the road last Sunday.
In the president's opinion, "Valverde represents many values, and is an example of the one who works, persists and fights for what he believes, the one who fights for his dream, gets it".
For this reason, he said, "it is a source of pride for the Region and an example of commitment, effort and capacity for improvement for the youngest".
The regional chief executive, who wished him every success in the new challenges he took on, reviewed some of the most important milestones in the cyclist's career, such as the silver medal obtained in 2003, the year in which he competed in his first world championship. Hamilton, "something that already made him go to the history of the Region and Spanish cycling."
Then came Madrid, Salzburg, Valkenburg, Florence and Ponferrada.
Until then, he got two silvers and four bronzes and, "finally the gold won last Sunday, because Valverde only runs to win", remarked the president.
