The University of Murcia has installed urban sports elements outdoors in the Espinardo Campus.
The spaces dedicated to physical exercise are located in three smoke-free areas that, after the adaptation work, have become small gyms for the university community and the general public.
The sports complex consists of 20 devices for physical activity divided into three areas along the Paseo Verde, a pedestrian avenue of 1.5 kilometers with an abundance of gardens and vegetation, located inside the main road of the university campus.
It is a place frequented by people who go out daily to walk and run, who can complete their physical activity in these facilities.
The surface of each space, called 'Calistenia Areas', occupies about 100 m2, are equipped with fences, inclined trellises, parallel bars, equipment for abdominal, lumbar, push-ups and climbing.
Calisthenics is a type of gymnastics performed with static material where the resistance is one's own body weight.
The equipment of these gyms allows complete training of the whole body.
The Sports Activities Service is preparing an exercise guide for each of the devices to guide the proper and healthy use of these spaces.
The Calisthenics areas are added to the UMU sports facilities that have a gym, five tennis courts, five paddle tennis courts, one tennis court, two pavilions and three sports courts, three football fields, two squash courts and tennis courts of table, a climbing wall, three multipurpose rooms and a swimming pool.
With this initiative, the University of Murcia promotes healthy practices among the university community offering other options to those who already run and walk the campus.
The project, promoted by Sustainable Campus, is part of the Spanish Network of Healthy Universities (REUS) and the commitment of the institution to the UN 2030 Agenda, specifically with the third Sustainable Development Goal dedicated to Health and Wellbeing.
