The PSOE will defend in the Plenary the construction of a direct and segregated bike lane of motorized traffic between Murcia and the Espinardo campus (25/09/2018)

Councilman Enrique Ayuso asks that the next bike lane projects in the municipality be included in an exclusive route for cyclists that starts at Juan Carlos I avenue and can be used by the 20,000 UMU students who attend the faculties of the area on a daily basis north.

In addition, he claims that security of access is improved through the main entrance of the campus

It is at least paradoxical that at this point, when the PP has filled its mouth to speak of bike lanes, there is no such way for the reserved use of bicycle users who arrive to the place where the greatest number of young people hosts daily in the Region.

The mayor of the Municipal Socialist Group Enrique Ayuso will state in the exhibition of the motion that will take to the Plenary the day after tomorrow that the campus that the University of Murcia (UMU) has in Espinardo, attended by about 20,000 students from Monday to Friday during the course, does not have a direct bike path that connects it with the urban center even though both points are separated by just six and a half kilometers.

Both the district and its surroundings, in which the business park and other professional activity facilities are located, are places that concentrate a multitude of daily commuting from or to the city of Murcia and numerous associations, among which include UMUenBici and MurciaenBici, they have repeatedly requested and for years a better connection between the capital and the Espinardo campus.

However, to this day it is a subject that still does not receive an adequate response.

Ayuso also recalls that the City Council supported with the consideration of "institutional declaration" in the plenary session of April 2018 the decalogue "For health and against climate change", which was presented at the Bicifestation on April 14 of that month.

This document, whose contents were exposed in the last Municipal Observatory of the Bicycle, includes that the educational centers of all the levels should have priority for their inclusion in the new axes, highlighting the connection of the Circular Square with the Espinardo campus through a real access cyclable, segregated and safe, that eliminates the danger of its main entrance.

"We are all aware that the use of bicycles is not only recommended from the perspective of the health of its users -and by itself, enough reason for its promotion-, but also reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, decreases the air pollution and acoustics, pacifies traffic and improves coexistence in our municipality. Thus, as is well known, the promotion of the bicycle, support for rental systems and the construction of bike lanes and parking lots should not be understood as expenses, but as investments that produce improvements in the quality of life in our cities and economic savings of medium-term importance ", explains Ayuso, who is based on these arguments at the time of presenting the motion that will defend on Thursday and that gives rise to three requests.

In the first place, it is claimed that the construction of a real cycleable and safe axis, through a complete and segregated bike lane, from Juan Carlos I avenue to the city of Murcia is included in the next projects of cycle lanes of the municipality of Murcia. university campus of Espinardo.

It is also intended to be agreed between the City Council, the University of Murcia and the Government of Spain the necessary modifications that improve and ensure the safety of cyclable access to the aforementioned campus through its main entrance - East under the A-7 motorway.

And finally, it is proposed to include in the agenda of the next Bicycle Observatory the previous agreements for the execution of the same and the processing, where appropriate, of the corresponding projects.
