The University of Murcia designs FioNA, a medical simulator that improves aspiration puncture processes (19/09/2018)

The University of Murcia has granted a patent license agreement to a North American multinational that has allowed the manufacture and commercialization worldwide of a medical simulator used to test the clinical procedure of fine needle aspiration puncture (FNA).

PAAF is a highly relevant diagnostic test with which tissue samples are obtained from the patient through a fine-gauge needle to diagnose possible diseases.

The novel device, which has been baptized with the name of FioNA, acronym of `Fine Needle Aspiration ', arises with the intention of helping doctors, medical students, cytotechnicians and nurses to practice and improve their skills in puncture needle aspiration fine, an essential hospital procedure for a correct diagnosis and management of patients.

The simulator designed by the UMU consists of an anthropomorphic mannequin formed by head and torso.

It is distributed rechargeable receptacles that recreate the different areas of puncture and that contain aspiration material, which in turn simulates the lesional content.

In addition, the fact that it is made of silicone "gives it a very realistic look and feel that makes it very effective for medical practice", according to Dr. Eduardo Alcaraz, pathologist and inventor of the device.

The new development arises from the needs and shortcomings detected from the professional experience of Dr. Alcaraz in relation to puncture and fine needle aspiration, since "traditionally, the practice of these procedures has been done using fruits or other objects that look little like a human body, which reduces the effectiveness of such simulations. In rare cases, the puncture procedure is performed for the first time on the patient, without previous practice, compromising their safety and being able to carry on it unnecessary pain and suffering, as well as other types of complications, "says Eduardo Alcaraz.

The North American company Sawbones, a division of the Pacific Research Laboratories Inc, based in Seattle and with a European delegation in Sweden, has become interested in the prototype developed and patented by the UMU and has reached an agreement for the manufacture, distribution and sale of the new simulator

Finally, after numerous communications and workshops at local, national and international medical congresses, on September 7 the experience was awarded the prize for the best poster in the II Conference on Medical Education, organized by the Center for University Studies in Medical Education of the University of Murcia.
