The University of Murcia (UMU), leader in pig reproduction research, will collaborate with the ANPSTAND Operative Group to develop this quality standard.
The project has been carried out together with the National Association of Breeders of Selected Pig Farming (ANPS) and other companies and cooperatives of the sector, to evaluate the current state of artificial insemination centers and establish minimum quality requirements.
The Spanish pork industry is one of the first among European countries thanks to its efficiency and technology.
The use of artificial insemination is a reproductive technique with a high degree of implantation, greater than 95%, and a very high efficiency.
Despite this, there is currently no national quality standard for seminal doses that are released to the market.
That is why Spain needs to develop a quality standard for pork semen samples, as the German and British swine industry did in the past.
The project requires previous work to analyze the current situation of artificial insemination centers and establish the minimum requirements to be met to guarantee quality.
For this, it is necessary to identify seminal analysis techniques, carry out a control system and define the management and financing of the standard and its certification.
The University of Murcia is a leader in pig reproduction research and will offer the operative group all the knowledge in sperm evaluation, training courses for the technical staff of the centers and their capacity for collaborative research in the field of swine reproduction.
The ANPS leads this project in collaboration with companies (Semen Cardona, Grup Gepork and Topigs Norsvin Spain), cooperatives (COBADU and CIAP Cinco Villas) and academic and research institutions (INIA and University of Murcia).
Other associations of farmers (ANPROGAPOR) and companies related to reproductive technologies (Magapor, Minitub Ibérica, Kubus, Humeco) are also integrated into the project.
This project has the support of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Ministry of Agriculture.
In addition, it supposes a magnificent opportunity for the University of Murcia to participate in projects in collaboration with private sectors and the swine industry.
