The Murcian will know firsthand the work of archaeologists in the San Esteban field (07/09/2018)

The Governing Board has given its approval to the specifications for contracting the project to review and diagnose the state of conservation, multidisciplinary study, adoption of consolidation measures and temporary exposure in the archaeological site of San Esteban (site I, Maqbara, oratory and adjacent streets).

This intervention will allow the development of an integral investigation of three areas that are particularly relevant to the site: Enclosure I (a large building interpreted as an Islamic funduq, a hostel for travelers and merchants), the oratory (a building interpreted as a Mudejar mosque) and the cemetery (Islamic, of which only a few graves are known).

The fieldwork will be developed in two months and will involve the archaeological study of these three spaces, including the complete excavation of the areas not documented until now, as well as a consolidation and restoration of the preserved architectural structures.

The project aims to achieve the direct participation of residents and visitors in the knowledge, conservation and enjoyment of the site.

To achieve this, the action program foresees the conditioning of visitor circulation areas, original streets and archaeological sites.

All these will be presented as examples of the architecture and way of life of the medieval residents.

The work will begin with the removal of the gravel and geotextile that currently protects the remains and with the subsequent archaeological cleaning of the structures after which a diagnosis of the state of conservation and excavation of the remains will be made.

Based on the data obtained, archaeological excavations will be carried out in the defined sectors of Precinct I and in the cemetery and, simultaneously, the architectural structures will be consolidated and a route for their visit will be adapted.

The works can be visited by the public from the moment the wooden roadway (reversible) has been completed that will allow you to walk through some of the streets, until you reach the two monumental sites (Precinct I and cemetery / oratory).

A system of guided visits to the research processes in the field and, after the completion of the field work, to the restored archaeological remains will be established.

A system of visual identification and soft lighting will also be installed in most of the road network of the site, not only in the area under study and restoration, which will take advantage of the current exceptional opportunity and offer an overview of the street, both night as day, from the recently installed outdoor walkway.

The main objective of this phase 0 is research and, therefore, the works will be channeled through the collaboration agreement between the City of Murcia and the University of Murcia, which has been commissioned to draft this project.

Thus, the facultativa direction of the execution of the archaeological actions and of investigation will be in charge of Jorge Eiroa, archaeologist and titular professor of Medieval History and Technical Historiographic Sciences of the University of Murcia;

the anthropological works will be directed by María Haber, anthropologist and archaeologist with great experience in the intervention in cemeteries and Associate Professor of Prehistory in the Department of Prehistory, Archeology, Ancient History, Medieval History and Historiographic Sciences and Techniques of the University of Murcia, and the works of consolidation and rehabilitation of structures will be directed by Pilar Vallalta, Graduate in Ancient History and Archeology and Diploma in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets, who has directed the last consolidation and restoration interventions in the archaeological site of San Esteban.

All these studies will be decisive to elaborate the proposal of putting in definitive value of the deposit and to endow with real contents, based on the knowledge, to the future center of interpretation.
