The project to complete the pedestrianization of Gran Via Alfonso X El Sabio, from its intersection with Jaime I El Conquistador Street to the confluence with the Plaza Circular, is currently in the tender phase.
The Governing Board has given an account of the decree signed by the Councilor for Finance, Contracting and Urban Mobility on August 3 for the approval of the project and specifications for contracting the works, opening a deadline until the 12th for the interested companies present their offers.
The renovation, which affects an area of 8,217 m2, has a bidding budget of € 3,255,637 and the planned execution period is 10 months, with the possibility of a reduction of up to 8 months.
The remodeling involves the complete renovation of the pavement and the creation of a modern and uniform urban treatment space.
The proposal that is going to be carried out goes beyond the simple paving of a street for its pedestrianization, since an integral project has been elaborated that orders the whole road and integrates a wide axis of 415 m in the pedestrian grid of the historical center and recover more than 14,400 m² for living areas, completing the most important itinerary of the city, between the river and the new areas of expansion.
In this way, the new model of urban mobility is consolidated, based on the prominence of pedestrians and cyclists, which is now applied to one of the most representative arteries of Murcia.
It will keep the accessibility shot to neighbors and services, taxis, distributions and public services, garbage collection and street cleaning, and respect the historical considerations of the environment, the urban landscape, urban ecology and vegetation and lighting conditions.
Also, the project takes into account the sustainability, comfort and quality of this public space, both for residents and for the rest of the citizens who daily use the central spaces of the boulevard.
Traffic reduction, friendly city
A key aspect to undertake the action is the reduction of traffic in the area.
The surveys carried out in 2018 show data that anticipate the reality of the future situation and the trend towards reducing traffic in the section between Jaime I and the Plaza Circular.
In this way, the study of traffic has confirmed the immediate effects of pedestrianization between Santo Domingo and Jaime I, since at present, traffic has been reduced by 61.87% prior to the start of work from the Plaza Circular to Jaime I, and 49.41% from Gutiérrez Mellado to the Plaza Circular.
In addition, in those areas where traffic is more local and usually correspond to access to garages of residents, such as Plaza Preciosa or Calle Lepanto, circulation has been reduced by around 20%.
This fact has occurred despite there being no restriction on traffic in the stretch between the Teniente General Gutiérrez Mellado Avenue and the Plaza Circular, and the traffic between Teniente General Gutiérrez Mellado Avenue and Santo Domingo is restricted to residents, loading and unloading and public services, although without access control measures, which will not come into operation until the pedestrianization work of Phase I is completed.
The traffic study plans to enable a restricted access to neighbors, public services and distribution by an itinerary coinciding with the current road roundabout west, in a north-south direction, which would allow entry to Lepanto Street and will leave the parking lot of the Plaza Beautiful towards Calle Jaime I.
Environmental improvement
The section between Jaime I and the historic center prolongs the previous restricted road axis, making pedestrian traffic compatible with access to neighbors and services, not only in this area of Alfonso X, but also towards Santa Clara streets up to Gran Vía and Enrique Villar to the University.
In parallel, but segregated and signposted, there is a dual-lane bike path that runs through the entire walkway, while in the perimeter streets to the performance, Plaza Preciosa, Jaime I and Gutiérrez Mellado is resolved the placement of garbage containers, stops of taxi and loading and unloading areas.
The remodeling supposes an important environmental improvement of the space by means of: suppression of road traffic;
lower noise pollution;
greater "habitable" surface;
rethinking the street cleaning solution (elimination of containers on the surface and circulation of collection trucks), etc.
Prior to the start of the remodeling works, and in the same way that was acted in the first phase, Aguas de Murcia will carry out the works of network renewal.
At this moment, they are evaluating the technical offers they have received to proceed with their adjudication and start the work throughout the month of October, coinciding with the completion of phase I.
Phase I advances
With regard to phase I of the project, service crossings have already been executed and this week the lighting and concrete installation will be completed in the vicinity of the Jesús María school, in order to facilitate access when the course begins.
It will also finish the paving from the Enrique Villar road to the corner of the Church of the Anas, as well as the assembly of planters in front of the school.
Next week the works will focus on the waterproofing and filling of topsoil in the planters and the paving up to the height of the Café Moderno, while from 10 September onwards the placement of the pavement in the school zone will begin and will complete the facilities.
This operation will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for sustainable growth 2014-2020, with the DUSI Murcia IT Strategy: Innovation + Tradition.
