The new pedestrian and cyclist itinerary between the Manterola walkway and the Alameda del Malecón will have areas of stay and walk, as well as a segregated bike lane.
The project, which has a budget of 3 million euros, includes the creation of "a new pedestrian promenade that will project slightly above the river and that will allow the Segura to be seen," said José Ballesta.
The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for the Modernization of Administration and Urban Development, José Guillén, and the mayor of Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, visited today the beginning of the works of the river walk that will structure the transformative project of the city 'Murcia Río', a green itinerary that affects an area of 19,825 m2 that will be used entirely for pedestrian and cyclist use, with family areas of stay and walk and segregated and bidirectional bicycle lane.
The itinerary will be established along the left bank of the river, connecting the existing area between the Manterola footbridge and the Alameda del Malecón, on the other side of the highway, through the creation of a promenade that will allow people to "peek into the Segura", highlighted José Ballesta , who pointed out that "the three ideas that guide this transformative project are to establish a new connection of the city with the Huerta, to open new connections between the Malecón and the river, and to strengthen human and social cohesion".
"We are going to open a new pedestrian promenade that will project slightly above the river and with a direct view of its channel, as an alternative route to the Malecón.
The connection between these two pedestrian circuits will be articulated through a greenway that will border the current deterrent parking, establishing a circular circuit that will allow to cross the entire mota and return, and which will also integrate the gardens of the Four Stones, which is already open to all Murcia, and the Alameda, whose works are moving at a good pace, "said the mayor.
The action also involves the creation of a mote or platform at the water level on the left bank, at the level of the Manterola footbridge, which will allow the walk along the river and the CHS machinery access, recovering the naturalization and Accessibility to the riverbank.
With a budget of 3 million euros and a deadline of nine months, the riverwalk project is a new impetus to the transformation process of the city in which the City Council works.
Connection between the city and the Huerta
The new walk includes fully urban areas with peri-urban and orchard areas, so its objective will be the vertebration and gradual connection of the city with its agricultural and natural environment.
In this way, there will be an urbanized walk along the river, from Manterola to the rear area of Murcia-Parque and the conservatory, which will give way to a greener and naturalized transition zone on the fluvial front of the current Malecón's deterrent parking, from which will access the garden areas and the new green spaces of the Alameda del Malecón and the Cuatro Piedras.
A visual protection zone is also created from the Malecón promenade, by means of a green strip parallel to it that recovers the traditional image of a vegetable garden that was taken from the promenade, and that conceals the parking area.
Platform 'flown' on the channel
From the beginning of the itinerary, in the area of the Manterola walkway, to the back of the conservatory, a walk of urban character will be developed, whose base will project slightly above the river.
It is proposed as a platform that overlooks the Segura, protected by a light rail and where the pedestrian routes, along the river, and for bicycles with segregated bike lanes, on the interior side.
The separation between these two areas, road and pedestrian, is made effective by a small gap that starts at the beginning of the walk and that decreases until it disappears in the final area of this itinerary.
There is also a tree-lined row with poplars, alms or elms, accompanied by shrubs and ornamental Mediterranean plants (laurel, broom, rose, elderberry, brambles, tarays).
Plaza-mirador and areas of stay
At the beginning of the itinerary, an access portico is planned that marks the entrance to the riverwalk.
Later, in the pedestrian zone, living spaces with benches and lighting in streetlights and floors will be enabled.
Approximately one third of the route, a plaza-mirador becomes a rest and meeting area.
Following the route, there is an extension of the width of the walkway at the height of the pool and auditorium of Murcia Park, so that a square is created again where the future footbridge that connects with the Plaza de la Ciencia, on the other shore, will end. from the river.
