José Ballesta and Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes visit the Sanctuary to check the status of this emblematic environment of Murcia.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Modernization of Administration and Urban Development, José Guillén and the Bishop of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes visited this morning the Sanctuary of the Fuensanta to check the status of the work of conditioning accesses and green areas adjoining the temple, facing the next descent of the Virgin that will take place on Thursday to mark the September Fair.
During this visit, the collaboration agreement between the City Council and the Bishopric of Cartagena was also signed in order to carry out a second phase of the rehabilitation works of the Fuensanta Sanctuary.
For this, the Department of Modernization of the Administration, Urban Quality and Participation has granted a grant to the Bishopric of Cartagena of 36,672 euros.
The works that have been executed consist of improvements in the accessibility, arrangement of the access ramp and the Mirador, which has been recovered after more than 50 years, the reform of low walls and masonry.
In the first phase the garden after the temple was also completely renovated, conditioning the pedestrian walkway, replacing curbs and repairing all the flowerbeds.
In addition, new urban furniture and a new playground have been installed.
Works have also been carried out on the ramp that gives access to the Sanctuary, guaranteeing security and better access to this environment visited by thousands of faithful.
In the second phase we will proceed to the arrangement of the cornices, agglomerates, painted walls and lintels and the recovery of aged brick.
Set-up for the descent of the Virgen de la Fuensanta
The works that are being carried out these days from the municipal service of Parks and Gardens, and that affect an area of ​​more than 1,300 square meters in the hillside of La Fuensanta, include the planting of trees, in particular 5 olive trees, flowers of season in the planters and planters, which also guarantee the safety of the environment, as well as cleaning the terraces of access to the Sanctuary and repainting the perimeter fences and street furniture.
Graffiti will also be eliminated.
In this way, the City Council, through the Department of Modernization of the Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, contributes to the recreational and social revitalization of this area.
