The dam of La Contraparada or Azud Mayor was built between the ninth and tenth centuries and distributes the Segura water throughout the Huerta de Murcia.
"Today, twelve centuries later, this marvelous design of hydraulic engineering designed by our ancestors, continues to function and channel water through the network of 310 kilometers of ditches and hazards that runs through our municipality," said the mayor.
José Ballesta added that "the Plan of Action of the Huerta de Murcia is the most important environmental and sociocultural initiative of recent decades, a vertebradora vision of the whole municipality, which connects Murcia districts, the historic center and its river, and that , thanks to this new International Visitor Center, now opens to the world as a must-see in our town, which unites roots and wings, tradition and vanguard.
The building, whose adaptation and provision of equipment has a cost of 340,000 euros and a deadline of 9 months, will open as an interactive museum of the Huerta distributed in two floors, which will have videowall and interpretive supports based on modules and exhibitions three-dimensional, which combine volumes with text, graphic media and technological media, offering a varied range of visual, audio and interactive proposals.
'The river that gives life'
The ground floor will be used as a reception area for visitors where they can find out about all the aspects of the center, pick up a multimedia guide or download QR programs for mobile devices that help them complete the contents of the visit.
The main resource of this ground floor will consist of an audiovisual room that will exhibit one of the main attractions with which the Center is endowed: the audiovisual 'The river that gives life'.
This audiovisual will suppose a powerful interpretative introduction of all the aspects treated in the Center on the garden and the river and will be realized with 2D and 3D animations, use of drones for aerial images, use of actors and varied infographic effects.
The ground floor will also have a large multipurpose room, which will be a dynamic space for use as a meeting room and multifunctional space suitable for conducting workshops and seminars, screenings, presentations, temporary exhibitions, talks, etc.
La Huerta and local cuisine
The access to the upper floor will be made through a staircase equipped with videowall, with various visual lighting resources and screens.
The upper floor has been designed as a large space with a unitary and pleasant atmosphere in which the contents will be displayed in four major thematic areas.
The first area reflects the origin, history and evolution of the Segura river, the huerta and the Contraparada, a second area on crops and uses in the huerta of Murcia, focusing on traditional agrarian techniques, local varieties, biodiversity in the crops, the main products of the garden of Murcia and local cuisine.
