The University of Murcia collaborates with researchers from the Murcian Institute of Biosanitary Research (IMIB-Arrixaca) in a project aimed at improving chronic wounds of patients suffering from diabetic foot disease.
Diabetic foot ulcer is a lesion that, in general, occurs in the sole of the foot in 15% of patients with diabetes.
Having this disease is associated with many complications, such as diseased arteries and veins and lack of sensation in the foot.
Thus, small traumas can trigger ulcers on the feet that are very difficult to heal and that, in 15% of cases, end in amputation of the limb.
The objective of this project is to treat diabetic foot ulcers through a new amniotic membrane therapy that substantially improves traditional treatment.
With this research the researchers try to determine which molecular factors are able to restore the healing of these lesions and accelerate their healing without the need to use aggressive methodologies.
As explained by Francisco José Nicolás, principal investigator of the HCUVA Cell Therapy Group IMIB-Arrixaca, "the project has a clear social projection" and "has the support of the national platform www.precipita.es" for those who are interested in the project they can participate in it.
