The announcement of the start of rehabilitation works of the former provincial prison directly eludes any reference to the historical memory that expresses this building.
For the councilor of the municipal group Cambiemos Murcia Nacho Tornel, the future design and use of this building "can not do without the story of a part of our history enclosed in these walls".
The fact of dispensing with the walls can not mean erasing the memory of those who suffered the repression of the Franco dictatorship.
"History is not ethereal, nor should it be avoided".
In the same sense, Tornel returns to insist on two aspects that were already expressed by his training.
On the one hand, the project can not be considered "as a container building without any definition", because that leads it to represent nothing.
On the other, it is essential that the building is linked to a council and a specific municipal service, so that it is managed with defined criteria and is not left in a multipurpose room.
"We propose that the part devoted to exhibitions be linked to the Municipal Museums service, especially the City Museum, as an extension of its activities."
As for the felling of arboreal specimens, Cambiemos Murcia requires the maintenance of all those that do not need to be eliminated, since they are part of the environment and nothing justifies their elimination, especially in the center of the city, where the natural effect is most needed.
"The old prison also provides a part of natural memory."
Talar that memory and tear down its walls can not lead to the elimination of the historical memory that represents this building and that should be the object of attention by the municipal institution as an essential axis of this action, avoiding to deprive the building of its meaning as recognition of the atrocities of the dictatorship and the courage of those who defended freedom and democracy.
