Rebeca Pérez, who this morning received the basic project carried out by IH Architects, stressed that the action will make it possible for an 'aggressive and hostile building, which is now passing by, to become a space for everyone to enjoy. '
It is a project without limits: without physical borders, because the action will allow to permeate the space and integrate it with the city;
without schedules, because it will be open 24 hours;
without generational barriers, because it can be used by people of all ages;
and without limits of uses, because it will house multidisciplinary activities.
The rehabilitation works of the Old Prison will be underway.
These are the forecasts, once the City Council has received the basic project carried out by the IH Architects studio, winners of the ideas competition organized for the recovery of this property.
The Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, stressed that it is 'a project without limits'.
On the one hand, without physical borders, because the action will allow to permeate the space and integrate it with the city;
neither, there will be schedules, because it will be open 24 hours;
also without generational barriers, because it can be used by people of all ages;
and finally, without limits of uses, because it will house multidisciplinary activities.
The basic project, delivered this morning by the architects Manuel Hernández and José Ibáñez, of IH Architects, comes to homogenize the two phases and it is fundamental to be able to start, immediately, the project of execution of phase 1, whose works are expected to be hired in September, with the intention of awarding them at the end of October and to start before the end of the year.
The rehabilitation of the Old Prison is one of the strategic projects of the city, together with Murcia Río, the intervention in the San Esteban site and its surroundings and the pedestrianization of Alfonso X, currently under construction.
In this case, the action foresees that the walls will be demolished and the prison yards incorporated into the city, making it possible for an aggressive and hostile building, which is now bypassed, to be transformed into a building for the enjoyment of all.
Open to the city, permeable and respectful
For this, the versatility of use of interior spaces is a fundamental aspect.
There will be a restaurant, store-exhibitions, assembly hall, offices, museum, workshops, auditorium, civic center and library.
In this way, the space resulting from the project will be a sociocultural center as a whole and each module that configures it.
It will be an open space to the city, permeable and respectful of the existing architecture, historical memory and surroundings.
The objective is to convert this central space of the city into a point of reference for exhibitions, cultural activities, events and citizen enjoyment.
Rebeca Pérez explained that 'urban integration, permeability and accessibility are objectives that we intend to achieve and for that we will open enclosed spaces and link them to the urban fabric in order to be exploited from the first phase'.
Among the works carried out by the IH Arquitectos team, there have been meetings with the different municipal technical services.
Among them, with the Environment area to define the treatment of the trees, especially with respect to the large existing eucalyptus trees and the trees that will be maintained in the new building.
