The Governing Council of the University of Murcia has approved at its meeting this Friday, July 20, the regulation that regulates the procedure for transsexual, transgender and intersex people who study or work in the institution can change their use name common in all documents and internal files of the University.

The regulation responds to the regional law (Law 8/2016 of May 27) and was born to address "the rights of people who manifest a gender identity other than that assigned at birth."

The regulation, which will come into force three months after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia, specifies that the new name of the applicants may be modified in the personal e-mail address, the university identification card or any other document of identification issued by the University, class lists, report cards and electoral censuses.

This modification of the name in no case may be applied to official documents, such as academic titles or certificates, where the name of the DNI or passport must still be shown if they are persons of a nationality other than the Spanish nationality.

To be able to request the change of name of common use it will be enough to process an application through the electronic registry of the University through the presentation of a basic instance addressed to the General Secretariat.

The University will not require in any case documentation justifying the gender identity manifested by the applicant, psychological or medical reports.

The mere request will be sufficient for it to be accepted.

It can only be rejected when requests for a name change do not respond to the purpose of the regulation or when the name of use that is intended to be adopted may be considered offensive in accordance with the Civil Registry Law.

The deadline for the application to be accepted will be ten working days and no more than one month for the application in the internal documents.

The regulation also includes the procedure for modification in the case of those persons who have obtained the official rectification of their name in the Civil Registry.

In this case, the official accrediting documentation must be sent and immediately the instruction that the name is modified both in the internal documents and in the official ones will be given.
