The works carried out cover more than 50% of Phase 1 of the project.
Now they are going to start work on the side road of Jesús María School.
José Ballesta reported that "Phase 2 has already been ordered to contract, from Jaime I to La Redonda".
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Miriam Guardiola, and the Councilor for Youth, Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, attended this morning to the pedestrian opening of the first part of Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, in which work will now begin on the side road of Jesús María School.
The works carried out cover more than 50% of Phase 1 of the project, and have involved the complete renovation of the stretch between Santa Clara and Jaime I streets, with natural stone pavement, the planting of 32 orange trees, urban artisanal furniture and the installation of new lamps, all with the 'Murcian stamp'.
Thus, the new tree saplings that protect the trees have been made with the design of the creative Miriam Albasini Gutiérrez, who recreates the image of fruit leaves.
Its realization has been carried out in the local company Fundirmetal, of Amando López.
The lighting also has a special character.
In this first phase, 29 streetlights of 6.5 m and 4.5 m will be installed, designed by the municipal technicians, and are equipped with LED lighting.
In addition to street light and trees, they feature RGB (5 colors) and built-in speakers, and the bottom and base of the lamp are protected by an anticorrosive resin.
The urban furniture will be completed with the installation of a Led panel of information in real time.
Simultaneous phases
Then, the improvement works will begin on the side from Gutiérrez Mellado to the dead end of Jesús María School, coinciding with the end of the school year and, in August, they will continue until Enrique Villar.
In total, Phase 2 of the project totals 7,670 m2.
José Ballesta reported that "Phase 2 of the remodeling of Alfonso X, from Jaime I to La Redonda, has already been ordered for contracting, adding another 8,200 m2 of pedestrian walkways to the city.
The objective is to combine the completion of Phase 1, scheduled for October, with the start of Phase 2. "
The project foresees a unitary pedestrian treatment of the entire walkway and includes the enabling of a two-way bike lane that will run along the west side, next to the Archaeological Museum, and new green areas, tripling the number of existing trees.
With regard to the archaeological remains found on Calle Santa Clara, the City Council proceeded to conduct a manual excavation supervised by two archaeologists and sent the corresponding report to the General Directorate of Cultural Property, who will make an assessment of them.
A reference axis in the historic center
The intervention is assuming the creation of a pedestrian itinerary in the historic center of the city, which will connect La Glorieta with La Circular, going through Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X;
opening a large reference pedestrian axis of around 50,000 m2 (an area equivalent to 5 football fields).
Limited traffic: less noise and pollution
The project gives priority to the pedestrian, so it includes a semi-total pedestrianization of space that restricts vehicle traffic to residents, public transportation (taxis), school zone and loading-unloading in a regulated schedule, circulating in a single direction towards Santo Domingo by the west road, the existing one next to the church of Las Claras.
At the base of the row of orange trees that have been planted, there are some handcrafted alcorques that simulate lemon leaves, made by a Murcian craftsman.
This will reduce environmental and acoustic pollution, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new spaces for public stay and walk, reducing noise and pollution.
The current area of terraces will be reconfigured without increasing it.
A new system of intelligent waste collection and adaptive LED lighting with low consumption will be implemented.
An Avenue that will tell the story of medieval Murcia
The pedestrianization project will be a reflection of the history of the city and will include elements and spaces dedicated to medieval Murcia, a configuration that will allow you to get closer to the life of the protagonists of the time, such as the monarch that gives its name to the emblematic Avenida, Jaime I or the King Wolf.
In addition, the works carried out include the recreation of the approximate layout of the old wall of Murcia.
