Huermur has learned of the intention of the Board of Landowners to approve, in the next general meeting to be held on Thursday at the City Council, the channeling of part of the Acequia Mayor de Barreras and repairs of the Acequia Alquiña.

Huermur has learned that the Board of Landowners has requested a public subsidy to the Autonomous Community for the realization of a project where according to its memory is intended to seal the ditches, mainly through walls and concrete sills in most of them, as well as the installation of prefabricated reinforced concrete channels.

The critical association that the actions will be carried out on currently naturalized and earth channels, of which only small repairs of the walls of original masonry are needed, where there are and the rest should remain as a natural channel.

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and Heritage of Murcia (Huermur) has learned of the intentions of the Board of Landowners for the next extraordinary general meeting, to be held this Thursday in the Assembly Hall of the Moneo Building of the City Council of Murcia, and where it is intended to approve the actions for the channeling of part of the largest channel of Barreras and repairs of the Acequia Aljufía, valued by the Board in more than 480,000 euros.

Huermur, indicates that the community of irrigators Hacendados Board has requested a public subsidy to the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the CARM to carry out a project whose memory presents as its main objective "the canalization of part of the Acequia Greater of Barriers that in the zone object of the project is in terrizo, with the main objective of the saving of the water ", as well as of secondary form the repair and restitution of masonry walls of the Acequia Barreras and Aljufía, done this necessary according to Huermur , if it were not for the purpose of making concrete screeds at the bottom of the canal.

From Huermur point out that it is necessary to repair the original masonry walls that after the rains of 2016 collapsed, but criticizes the intention of concreting the bottoms of the channels, as well as the channeling with concrete walls, channels ditches that today have a natural state, and that only requires cleaning and maintenance.

From the conservationist group point out that cementing the channels of the acequias of the orchard, with the excuse of "saving water" is more than dismantled with the numerous scientific studies, including the University of Murcia, which show that the water that runs through the The natural channels of the irrigation ditches of the orchard are not lost, on the contrary, they contribute to the maintenance of the water table, to the maintenance of the natural zones of the garden and to the regulation of the climate of the valley.

The granting of this subsidy requested to the Autonomous Community is awaiting a report from the competent Environmental Body, as well as from the City of Murcia, which must inform about the suitability of the actions planned by the Haciendadados Board, for which they require the Mayor from Huermur Murcia and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Huerta to discourage the idea of ​​filling these historic acequias de la Huerta with concrete, and do not allow them to become reinforced concrete channels, without any environmental value.

Finally, Huermur points out that the ditches should be repaired with their original masonry in the sections where it existed, but the sections of natural riverbed along the land with its riparian vegetation should be kept intact to preserve their environmental and cultural values, since they only need a periodic and effective maintenance, which shines by its absence, and not millionaire works to wax them.
