This green space with riparian vegetation offers a privileged visual panorama of the Segura from the Paseo del Malecón, until now unpublished.
José Ballesta: "One of the main lines of the city project 'Murcia Río' is to integrate and connect the landscape and the routes on foot and by bicycle between the river and the Malecón".
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Modernization and Urban Development, José Guillén, inaugurated today the Garden of the Four Stones, the first river park of the city project 'Murcia River', which connects the Paseo del Malecón with the mota del Segura, through a green path for family and sports leisure.
"This action in such an emblematic point of our city opens a direct access from the Malecón towards the left bank of the river to pedestrians and cyclists, a previously unprecedented gateway that offers a privileged visual panorama of the Segura from the busy Paseo del Malecón ", Highlighted José Ballesta.
It is a connection between the urban and the natural that respects the orography of this environment so transited by Murcia.
The new mall has more than fifty large trees and an intelligent system of lighting and irrigation management.
The works, which involved an investment of 142,000 euros, were carried out on the 3,000 m2 municipal plot.
Work begins on the Alameda del Malecón on 20,000 m2
"One of the main lines of the Murcia River project is to integrate and connect the landscape and the walking and cycling routes of the River and the Malecón.
For this, the Garden of the Four Stones will be integrated with the other large annex garden of Murcia River: the Alameda del Malecón, a green space of 20,000 m2, which will connect the Manterola footbridge area, on the other side of the highway ", explained the mayor.
It is the second large garden of 'Murcia River', whose works have already begun to run and move at a good pace, with a bidding budget of 1.1 million euros.
These two gardens will be integrated with the great river promenade 'Murcia River' that will allow 'lean out to the Segura'.
This urbanized promenade next to the Segura, from Manterola to the rear area of Murcia-Parque and the conservatory, will give way to a greener and more natural transition zone on the fluvial front of the current Malecón's dissuasive parking, from which access to the garden areas and the new green spaces of Alameda del Malecón and Cuatro Piedras.
Murcia will thus have a new natural and tourist attraction, opening a park of nature and leisure that will expose some of the most characteristic elements of its idiosyncrasy as a city on the shores of the Mediterranean: the natural environment and the river, light and climate, and the outdoor activity.
Recovery of the ditch of 'La Arboleja' a thousand years later
The regeneration of the Cuatro Piedras space has been carried out in the most natural way possible and, for this, the existence of the ditch 'La Arboleja', which in its final stretch reached these lands, has been exploited.
This action involves the recovery of this traditional irrigation channel "almost a thousand years later," the mayor said, "which has been rebuilt and can be seen uncovered in the plot, while ensuring the irrigation of the plantations.
White poplars and mulberry trees by the river
The project has involved the planting of native trees on the banks of the Segura.
Specifically, 50 specimens of white poplars and a dozen mulberry varieties traditionally used in the Huerta de Murcia (Cristiana, Macocana and Valenciana).
In order to bridge the gap between the plot and the north and south accesses, pedestrian routes with shrub species on terraces have been executed.
These trails have stairs along which various ramps run, thus ensuring accessibility for all.
The pedestrian junction between the Paseo del Malecón and the left bank of the river is made by means of a path that runs between the area of the mulberry trees and ends up meeting the existing pedestrian and cyclist route on the mote of the channeling.
Smart management of irrigation and lighting
Within the Murcia Smart City projects, the Garden of the Four Stones has an intelligent irrigation management system, through the installation of sensors that take data relative to the temperature and humidity of the environment, which contributes to saving water and the immediate detection of leaks in the network.
Likewise, the public lighting network of this large connecting garden between the Malecón and the river is managed in an automated way.
The luminaries remain off or in low consumption mode and, when detecting the presence of pedestrians, they activate and increase the intensity of the light.
Murcia Río: progress of a City Project
This action is part of 'Murcia Río', the structuring project of the most important municipality for the coming years, which affects the 27 km of the Segura channel and an area of 250,000 m2.
Of the actions culminated this past year highlights the bike lane that runs through the lower part of the river bed, in a length of 1.8 km.
that allows to cross the city pedestrianly and in bicycle, between the Bridge of Manterola and the Auditorium;
as well as the lighting project of the riverbed as it passes through the City.
"We are beginning to collect the first fruits of the joint work we are doing, with concrete actions that are already materializing and place us a little closer to our goal: the social and landscape recovery of the river as it passes through the heart of Murcia, for the enjoyment of all, "said the mayor.
