Murcia now demands the elaboration of a municipal plan to fight against child poverty (21/06/2018)

In its recent report 'Situation of children in the Region of Murcia 2017', Unicef stresses that more than one in three children in the Region is at risk of poverty or exclusion

Alzamora emphasizes that "the Plan is necessary that contains an economic memory and a chronogram in phases, that covers a period of at least four years"

NOW MURCIA demands the elaboration of a Municipal Plan to Fight Childhood Poverty "that stops the social reproduction of poverty and that favors the participation and co-responsibility of all the related actors".

The municipal formation will defend a motion in the next Plenary Session "with the aim of helping to reverse the municipal policy of the terrible impact that the cuts policies of recent years have had on children and youth".

Miguel Angel Alzamora notes that the Murcia Now proposal seeks to "advance in the analysis and coordination between administrations and social entities that work with the young population of the municipality, with the intention of promoting good practices that are carried out and programming other new ones that are considered necessary and possible, involving the society in the design and approach of the problem of child poverty ".

In its recent report 'Situation of children in the Region of Murcia 2017', Unicef stresses that it is essential to "strengthen strategies in favor of children at the municipal level", as well as "to make a coordinated effort to policies aimed at the protection of rights and the integral development of children at the regional and local levels ".

The councilman of Now Murcia notes that "the City assumed in 2016 the commitment to develop a Municipal Plan for Children and Adolescents, but in addition to that has not started, we believe that the importance of the problem means that our objectives must be addressed to eradication of child poverty. "

According to Unicef in the report, the Region of Murcia has 39.3% of children under 18 at risk of poverty or social exclusion (more than 120,000 children), which means more of 6 points above the national average (32.9%).

In other words, more than one out of every three children in the Region is at risk of poverty or exclusion.

On the other hand, the survey of living conditions for Murcia carried out by EAPN Región de Murcia (European Network for the Fight against Child Poverty) highlights that "40% of Murcia's municipal households have no capacity to cope with a unforeseen expenses of 650 euros with their own resources, 11.4% have had delays in payments related to housing (mortgage, rent, receipts, ...), 40.8% can not afford to go on vacations outside the home at least one week a year, 15.9% arrive with great difficulty at the end of the month with their income, and 17.2% can not afford to keep their home at an adequate temperature during the cold months. "

The motion that will defend Now Murcia in the next Plenary establishes that the Municipal Plan of Fight against Child Poverty begins by making a diagnosis of this problem in the municipality of Murcia.

In the elaboration of the Plan, the Town Hall and the Autonomous Community must participate, but also social entities, associations and professionals related to infant feeding, with the health of the minors, the child abuse, the family mediation, housing, environment, education, etc. .

In addition, the different phases of the plan would include consultations to children and adolescents.

Alzamora emphasizes that the Plan is necessary to contain an economic report and a phased schedule, covering a period of at least four years.

The motion also establishes that the first phase of commissioning and design begins in a maximum period of 6 months.

The mayor highlights that "child poverty is not only a matter of food deprivation, but affects many dimensions of the lives of our children."

In addition, "poverty is a social determinant that affects health and education, as well as the general development of childhood and adolescence", as well as "the problems of precarious housing and evictions and the high rates of teenage pregnancy. , among others, affect in turn the aforementioned increase in child poverty, before which the City Council has the duty to act much more firmly ".
