Reading clubs

The Reading Clubs project is developed in the Senior Social Centers of the Municipality of Murcia since 1998 through a collaboration agreement between the City of Murcia, the University of Murcia, the Regional Library, Acdomur and the Foundation of Friends of the reading.

The number of Centers for the Elderly in our municipality is 76, of which 17 currently have a Reading Club, and there has been a progressive increase in the number of Centers since the beginning of the project.

These Centers have as an essential objective the integral development of the elderly, fostering the participative integration of the same in their environment.

The objectives of the activity are:

- Promote the habit of reading among the elderly population as a way to maintain and increase active aging.

- Promote dialogue and communication in groups around reading and other related activities.

- Enable cultural and training activities in the Senior Centers.

- Create groups of elders that encourage mutual support and relationship around a formative and cultural activity such as reading.

The Reading Clubs usually meet one day a week or biweekly, for an hour or an hour and a half, around the reading and commentary of a book, previously selected, and of which the Regional Library provides a copy for each member of the Club;

book that you can also take home, for a more personal and relaxed reading.

Two volunteers participate in each Club, who act as coordinators and animators of the Reading Club, and a group of between ten and fifteen or more elderly people, members of the center.

The volunteers belong to two volunteer associations for the elderly, usually related to teaching;

although also in some Reading Clubs the volunteers are partners or partners of the Senior Centers themselves.

It is worth mentioning the high percentage of women participating in the Clubs, which is around 75%.
