Cambiemos Murcia today urged the mayor, José Ballesta, to offer the municipality to host refugees as they have done other cities such as Madrid, Alcoy, Barcelona or Valencia, whose municipality has already begun the process with the Government of the Generalitat so that the ship of the French NGO SOS Méditerranée, with 629 refugees on board, could dock in the port city.
The councilor Margarita Guerrero has pointed out that the City of Murcia has to commit, "beyond the words", to adopt effective measures, allocate more resources in relation to the humanitarian crisis that Europe is experiencing, and thus comply with the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"The Consistory can not remain impassive," he said.
Guerrero recalled that Ballesta defended in May 2016, within the framework of a meeting of the Governing Board of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), the need to assume its "obligation" as local responsible and "support an intervention for the defense of the rights of those men, women and children who flee from war and terror. "
At that meeting, the Murcian councilor promised that Murcia would be part of the network of refugee hosting municipalities of the FEMP, which has not been effective until two years later, when on February 25, 2018 the Governing Board gave the go-ahead to participate in this initiative "as a sign of involvement and responsibility." The mayor has insisted that if the government team really wants to get involved "what you have to do is offer the municipality as a 'refuge city' for the host to refugees "and, at the same time, request the Autonomous Community to put in place the necessary aid mechanisms and ensure the immediate fulfillment of international treaties on asylum.
The Local Refugee Support Table, without summoning
In addition, has made reference to the motion approved in the Plenary Session of the City of Murcia corresponding to September 2015, at the proposal of the municipal groups of PP, PSOE and Citizens, in support of refugees, which among other agreements is proposed creation of the Local Refugee Support Table, which was never launched.
"There you can clearly see the lack of will of the Ballesta team in terms of the implementation of policies for reception and social integration," concluded Guerrero.
