The University of Murcia closes the cinefórum cycle 'La ciencia en la gran pantalla' with 'Solaris' (11/06/2018)

After the great success achieved since this initiative began in October, where very diverse disciplines of research such as criminology, mathematics, and artificial intelligence have been treated, the last session of the present course will take place on June 14 to 6:00 pm at Café de Ficciones.

On this occasion, the protagonist will be physics, one of the oldest academic disciplines.

In fact, Neil deGrasse Tyson, states in the documentary Cosmos that we descend from astronomers, a subdiscipline of it.

Despite this, it remains unknown to many people because of the fear generated by entering into this knowledge or, even, by indifference.

This time, Solaris (2002), a film from the homonymous work of the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem, will be projected, which tells how Doctor Chris Kevin ventures on a journey into the unknown after receiving a distress call from Prometheus, a space base located next to the planet Solaris.

Arriving at the station they see a dark and dreary atmosphere, most of the crew has died and those that remain seem to be in a trance state.

After the completion of the film, Emilio Torrente Lujan, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Murcia, will discuss the scientific aspects of the film and delve into the subject and, on the other hand, with Estefanía Sánchez, PhD student at the University of Almeria and specialist in Film, History and Literature, who will frame the talk on both the aesthetic and formal characteristics of the film (as well as its comparison with its predecessor, Solaris de Tarkovski, and other classics of the genre), as in the literary aspects of the book on which they are based (Solaris de S. Lem).

This activity, which belongs to the cycle 'Science on the big screen', organized by the Scientific Culture Unit of the Vice-rectorate of Communication and Culture of the University of Murcia, is the last session of this initiative that will continue next year.

To attend the session it is necessary to register at ucc@um.es with your name and surname.

Admission is completely free until full capacity is reached.
