The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the councilman of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and members of the Municipal Corporation today delivered the awards of the World Environment Day to schoolchildren and schools that have stood out for its commitment to nature and sustainability, within the different environmental programs of the City Council, which celebrates this commemoration under the motto 'Towards a city free of pollution'.
"You represent the best of ourselves, because instead of asking 'what is going to happen', you have decided to take a step forward to ask yourself 'what are we going to do'.
The great challenge of humanity in this 21st century is going to be the environment.
Pollution by plastics this year is the central theme of this year.
If we continue at this pace, in 2050 there will be as many plastic bottles in the sea as there are fish.
However, you and you, thanks to education, are changing the world and, for this reason, I thank you on behalf of the entire municipal Corporation, "said the mayor.
In the category of 'Green Schools', which celebrates its 16th edition, three schools were distinguished: the CEIP Our Lady of the Consolation of Espinardo (winner), Infanta Cristina de Puente Tocinos and Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente de Murcia (second prize).
This environmental program promotes green and sustainable practices in the schools themselves to turn them into establishments that respect the environment.
In the category of 'School Gardens', in which children have participated in the cultivation of autochthonous vegetables through organic farming, four other centers have been distinguished: CEIP José Rubio Gomariz de cabezo de Torres (winner), Our Lady of Atocha de Murcia, Cooperativa de Enseñanza Severo Ochoa of Los Garres and San Andrés de Murcia (accésits).
In each of these two programs, 8,450 schoolchildren and 7,000 schoolchildren participated, respectively.
On the other hand, the students who participated in the 'Drawing and Writing Contest for Schoolchildren', whose central theme was 'Towards a pollution-free city', were distinguished.
