Murcia City Council is working with NGOs in the municipality for the implementation of projects that improve the quality of life of disadvantaged people.
Specifically, the Department of Employment, Civil Protection and Development Cooperation, who heads Beatriz Hontoria, participates in the implementation of a portable eye hospital in Togo, which will benefit thousands of people, so it has worked on improving medical equipment in maternity Equatorial Guinea, in the settlement of the displaced and injured by the earthquake in Peru in 2007, and in many agricultural development projects and education in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Hontoria has met with the leaders of over 50 NGOs that receive grant from the City of Murcia to be planning new grants and subsidies.
The countries in which they work are the most disadvantaged, in which there are significant gaps in areas such as health, basic infrastructure, education, etc.
Primarily, the projects are for: El Salvador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Algeria, Mauritania, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and India.
These projects are aimed at much lower income countries than Spain.
In the latest Human Development Report published by the UN, Spain Ranked 15 out of 182 countries, while countries such as Togo take the position 159, or Democratic Republic of Congo in the post 176.
This situation in the world ranking means a lack of resources, access to healthcare, education, water, etc.
Ie basic needs for personal development.
