Start the XI Festival Murcia Tres Culturas (18/05/2010)

The Phoenician East Dance Company will open tomorrow, at 20 pm in the Auditorium Víctor Villegas, Murcia XI Three Cultures International Festival with his show DROM, a journey through dance from Rajasthan to Spain, led by Cristiane Azem.

One year, the Festival will start with great success and sold out all the invitations.

This new edition of the Festival, which is expected to draw over 67,000 spectators, will continue through May 29 with the participation of 27 countries and the celebration of 64 musical and dance performances, symposia, film, theater, exhibitions and courses university.

DROM, which means road or path Roma, told through the dance the long road taken by the Gypsies from Rajasthan, India, through Persia, Turkey, Central Europe, Egypt and France to reach Spain.

In his trip to Persia brings the mystery of the tribal dances with swords.

In Turkey, the strength and vitality of melodies designed to entertain and dance designed to seduce.

In Central Europe, the melancholy and the tears of a people becomes a circus and fantasy, a counterpoint to the unspeakable fate revealed by the cards.

And in Egypt, the mystery of the desert becomes a feast of rhythm and fire, where the union between Arab culture and Gypsy has become indigenous element of two different origins.

On his way through France, DROM leads to Sainte Marie de la Mer, a place of pilgrimage and of devotion to Sara, the black virgin gypsies.

From there to Spain, arrived at Granada, where an Andalusian song opens the gates of the Alhambra and a flamenco lament Albaicin leads to the caves where our journey ends.

DROM refers to the culture of each region and also to a culture of assimilation of traditions brought by distant gypsy caravans.

A journey of centuries of exchange of traditions, cultural continuities through music and dance.

The symbol chosen to DROM is the Ashok Chakra, a wheel, a circle, which is represented on the flag of India, and also in the international Romani flag.

It originated in a mural of ancient Persia.

Hence the presence of the spins in all dances, the ties to cultural continuity from India to Spain, the rotation about its own axis, evoking the rotations of the stars, transforming the energy in motion, promoting travel and road.

The sounds of Drom

Result of intensive research, DROM is full of references and contains key sound elements of the culture to which it relates.

The sound works well as a common thread of staging and that from the mystery, sensuality and melancholy of his notes invites the viewer on a journey of sensations that will transport you to the next destination of the caravan.

The strength and vitality of the rhythms and melodic cacophony invade the stage.

Our tour begins with a musical sound track of Indian call pundela, describing a traditional story where the character is far from their homelands in search of a better life.

Then, an issue traditionally accompanied by a dance called roomal.

The transition to Persia is a classic piece of Iranian Santur and Tombak, two key instruments, referring to the heyday of the Silk Road, where the gypsies came to Persia.

This point is illustrated with a theme of the courts of Uzbekistan called rising sun.

The metal castanets sound with a repetitive drum and dried typical less developed cultures are full of vital force, "referring to contact between Roma and the tribes of the mountains in Persia and mysterious artist and sling.

Archaic modal melodies and lead us to Turkey, where the nay (oriental flute) and the rhythm of trance of Ayub us to the spirituality of Sufi dervish tradition.

The tour continues in France, where the atmosphere of devotion to Our Lady Sarah, the Black and mixed with the euphoria of Jazz Mamouche, intense contrast of feelings, religious manifestations typical of gypsies.

Once on the Bosphorus, gypsy caravans have two possible destinations: Central Europe or Egypt.

The Gypsies who arrived in Egypt have brought many traditions, but have found a local culture on the banks of the Nile and made it his own, creating a detached traditional Turkish forms, using Argul (primitive bagpipes) and other instruments desert.

Finally we come to Spain.

It's the end of the fourteenth century when the first gypsies in Spain, an elaborate music sounded in the Alhambra in Granada, the Andalusian melody gharnati tradition.

To DROM, has chosen a merger of two well-known popular songs: La Tarara and Ya baladi bent to suggest the mix.

Cristiane Azem

Lebanese and Italian origin and born in Brazil, Cristiane Azem takes 16 years based in Madrid.

Director, choreographer and dancer FENICIA Spanish Dance Company East, was nominated in 2008 for Best Dance performer Chivas Awards for Performing Arts for DROM.

He has extensive training in dance and body language and his special interest in the roots of flamenco has been the source of the creation of DROM.

Cristiane searches through a neat staging racial integration of the essence of these cultures to the language of performance.

Creative freedom is essential in his work, which is not intended as a reflection of specific folklore but to give an air of timelessness to the essence of being expressive and atavistic and interaction between cultures, searching for elements that integrate it in the long journey the comings and goings of art.

The result of all this, FENICIA is consolidated as a reference in the oriental dances in Spain, becoming the first company of its kind to be programmed in a theater official season in Spain with great critical and commercial success.

For years, runs her own dance company in Madrid and has worked extensively in the dissemination of oriental dance in Spain.
