Mercamurcia rewarded for its environmental management (30/10/2009)

The World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM), an association that brings together the main wholesale markets in the world, convened at the beginning of the year the Wholesale Market WUWM Awards 2009 under the theme "Sustainable Operation Market" which sought to highlight the market sustainability partners through the use of new or existing technologies.

Participation in this contest is open to all members of the Wholesale Markets WUWM, and in the same three prizes are awarded in Gold, Silver and Bronze, and two Certificates of Merit.

Mercamurcia has received the Silver, Gold went to the market in Nice (France) and the bronze award was for Mercabilbao.

The environmental management work done Mercamurcia in garbage collection, the use of waste from the slaughterhouse to produce, among others, biofuels, zero discharge of wastewater from the meat complex, the introduction of alternative energies such as photovoltaics or System certification ISO 14000 Environmental Quality for Complex Markets Meat and fruits and vegetables and fish have been recognized with this prestigious award.

Selective waste collection: The

retrieve a 68.04% of waste generated in the Fruit and Vegetable Market and 96.51% of that generated in the Meat Complex.

Alternative energy (PV): PV systems currently operating in the Food Unit produce 0.4 megawatts, but by mid-2010 Mecamurcia have a total of 1.9 MW of PV through the public bidding of covers markets.

The clean energy generated will exceed by more than 50% consumed in MERCAMURCIA and prevent the emission into the atmosphere over 3100 tons of CO 2. Should be borne in mind that Mercamurcia has a built area of 40,000 square meters approximated. Only Meat Complex, where the slaughterhouse is located, has a volume of killing more than 17,000 tons, has 8,000 m 3 of cooling facilities and a station for sewage treatment.
