The mayor says the bike path Contraparada enhances the character of Murcia as healthy and pleasant city (23/10/2009)

The banks of the River Segura, from the heart of the city to the iconic Contraparada space, is called to be a place of attraction for those wishing to enjoy a city like Murcia, is increasingly healthy, humane and enjoyable.

The actions carried out involved the extension of the existing bike path, which from now reaches 12 kilometers, planting trees, creating a circuit for BMX type bike paths and areas for gymnastics and gerontogimnasia.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, big fan of cycling, has completed this morning the way to Contraparada accompanied, among others, by the Deputy Mayor of Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cache, and Sports, Miguel Cascales, along Urbamusa the director, Roque Ortiz.

The City opened in the summer of 2000, the first installment of this fun bike path, which then had 2.5 kilometers later extended to 4.7 km.

The recently completed project involved the extension of rail between Beniscornia and Contraparada corner and the lighting between the Paseo del Malecon and this place.

The cost of the work, funded by the Local Investment Fund, amounted to 2.3 billion euros.

First, this action is to increase the existing bike lane on a length of about 7.3 km further, reaching a total length of 12 km of bike lanes.

The new miles have two meters wide with asphalt finish, plus an additional band of two meters wide paved with albero intended for pedestrians.

Pedestrians and cyclists share the same pathway to increase the safety of movement of both, to conveniently marked with paint both horizontal and vertical signals that encourage mutual respect.

Secondly, the project includes the allocation for the entire length of bike path lighting to allow night time use, while on and off hours are restricted to not affect in any way existing animal ecosystems across the river Segura.

Have also been planted about 250 trees along the bike path in order to achieve effective environmental regeneration of the road, creating shaded areas for summer periods.

It has also implemented a complete circuit for BMX-type bikes only in the city, equipped with ramps, slopes, etc..

The circuit is completed with an adjacent area with equipment for gymnastics, accompanied by the placement of another area in the Paseo del Malecon where you have placed gerontology and gymnastic apparatus.

The mayor also took the opportunity to announce the project that is pushing the City to connect the auditorium with the end of the municipality, following the River Butte.

In this way, it will reach about 30 linear miles of healthy circuit, given shape by the Segura, which will incorporate even more to the everyday life of Murcia.
