During the nineteenth century saw a transformation in thinking whose effects are manifest even today.

The mechanisms of nature and the variety of living things arose in entirely new ways and that underlie all modern biology.

The ultimate implications of these ideas are controversial.

A man and a book came to symbolize the new evolutionary biology.
