Scientific study at the University of Murcia the capacity of soil as a sink for greenhouse gases (10/06/2009)

Scientists from the Spanish Society of Soil Science held tomorrow, day 11, a meeting at the University of Murcia in which analyzed the possibility of enhancing the effect that as a sink for greenhouse gases.

At the meeting, to be held from 10:30 am at the Faculty of Biology, will give a lecture Professor of Soil Science, University of Santiago de Compostela Felipe Macias, who will discuss the "atmospheric carbon sequestration on the ground" .

For the lecturer, "soils are a major potential carbon sinks through mechanisms that temporarily stabilized organic matter from biomass."

Much of this capacity, Macias added, has been lost in cultivated soils by human activities such as the elimination or modification of vegetation cover or excessive tillage.

This professor of Soil Science is optimistic about the possibility of reinvesting the process and to recover or even increase the capacity of sinks of greenhouse gases ground if you know the processes that lead to an increase in the amount and stability of matter organic and available resources are used.

This scientific meeting, which includes an assembly of members of that Spanish Society of Soil Science, is promoted by Professor of Soil Science, University of Murcia Roque Ortiz Silla.
