The ICU of the Hospital Morales Meseguer, among the five best in the country by the prestigious 'Best in Class' (13/12/2008)

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Universitario Morales Meseguer has been awarded the prestigious award "Best in Class', a distinction that aims to publicly acknowledge the best hospitals, both public and private, seeking excellence in management and the care they provide to their patients.

The awards also highlight the best services in different specialties, including this year has recognized the ICU of this hospital Murcia.

The jury for the awards 'Best in Class' highly rated the service highlighting the ICU case mix, and better utilization of respiratory and percutaneous cardiovascular interventions.

She also appreciated the complexity and the greater relative weight (ie, ICU patients serves more complex than the average for similar units), the management of farms, with an average stay lower, and mortality, whose Death Risk Index (IMAR) of 0.79 is 21 percent lower than expected in patients with the same complexity.

The managing director of the Hospital Morales Meseguer, Thomas Fernandez, said, "This award is obviously an encouragement to continue working and improving the benefit of patients in our care and more serious as it should be a more secure and efficient" .

Fernandez said that the UCI has a very fruitful relationship with other services of the center, which develops common, for example Pneumology Unit (NIV).

More than 10,000 patients treated

In the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Morales Meseguer work a head of service, nine staff physicians and two provisional contract with six residents in training doctors, 43 nurses, 33 medical assistants and one administrative.

From November 20, 1995, when he began to operate the service, the ICU had increased to nine beds and 12 beds in 1996 and 1915 to 1918 beds by 1999.

Currently the unit has 18 beds, and since 1995 has treated 10,700 inpatients, plus another 9,000 attended, but not paid.

In 2007 the UCI responded to 1,703 patients.

The UCI's Morales Meseguer has won several awards including the award recognizes the best paper in the Portuguese Congress of Intensive Care Medicine.

He has also received the award for best poster at the conference this year at the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the world's largest conference on respiratory disease, where the UCI also received a scholarship from the leading contribution to this conference.

It is the first time the hospital ICU is awarded Best in Class.
