Opportunities for All (26/09/2008)

The European Commission has approved the project "Information and active citizenship: a strategy for inclusion of people with fewer opportunities" that the Department of Youth and Employment Murcia City Council presented the Youth in Action Programme, whose main objective is to propose measures that strengthen the participation of young people without excluding any, especially young people affected by a sensory disability in the Youth Information Centres.

The work of Murcia, with a score of 85 out of 100, is one of two selected Spanish among 200 that were submitted to this call, a total of 29 were approved.

This project aims to establish activities designed by and for young people with sensory disabilities to improve access to information and raise awareness among youth about the use of information technologies and communication.

Among the results expected to be achieved include:

- Adaptation of youth information services for young people with sensory disabilities.

- The involvement of these youth centers and youth information services.

- The strengthening of their associations.

This project involves 56 young representatives of 8 youth organizations with sensory disabilities (blind and deaf) and eight Youth Services municipalities of Murcia, Setúbal (Portugal), Turin and Vicenza (Italy), Paris (France), Mexico City (Mexico), San Isidro (Argentina), Cali (Colombia), Cuenca (Ecuador).

In Murcia, along with the Department of Youth and Employment, part FESORMU Federation of the Deaf in the Region of Murcia.

This project, which has a € 98,000 grant by the European Commission, will start in December 2008 and end in December 2009.

Includes a seminar Exchange of Best Practices in Youth Information as a strategy for inclusion of people with fewer opportunities in Murcia, a youth exchange information on youth and youth inclusion strategy and the impact of media transmission intercultural values and inclusion of young people in Cuenca (Ecuador) and a seminar on the work Assessment: WORKING TOGETHER: Information, Youth and Citizenship in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia).

To understand the objectives of this project must start from the consideration of disability as a human rights issue and the person with disabilities as a citizen with full rights.

Participatory democracy requires that public policies concerning people with disabilities has been done with the assistance of the disabled people themselves, through their representative organizations, active participation and responsibility to be given at all stages of the decision: processing , consultation, approval, exercise, monitoring and evaluation.

This project is of particular difficulty for young people with sensory disabilities have in relation to youth information services and current media and communication capabilities that require special media and specific content.

It is strengthening partnerships of youth with disabilities, so that through youth information enhance their ability to participate and establish actions designed by and for young people adapted to sensory impaired young people to improve access to information and raise awareness among young people about the use of information technologies and communication.
