The Council of Good Men and the Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia started the process for Intangible Heritage of Humanity (22/09/2008)

The Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, delivered this morning at the Ambassador Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO, Maria Jesus San Segundo, the joint application file to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Council Good Men of the Huerta de Murcia and the Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia.

With the introduction of this document by the Spanish State to the UNESCO, is a process of examination and evaluation that will culminate in September 2009, the date on which the Committee, having evaluated all the nominations, then publishes its decision.

This statement implicitly entail a high degree of protection to the intangible asset and the recognition and dissemination worldwide.

The event was also chaired by the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Valencian Community, Trinidad Miró, director general of Cultural Heritage Valenciano, Paz Olmos, Benito Abellán, representing the Council of Good Men, and Vicente Nacher, representative of the Court the waters of Valencia.

The bidding process started after obtaining the express and unanimous approval of the Heritage Council at the meeting held in Cartagena in October 2007.

From then until now has been preparing the documentation required by UNESCO for technical specialists, both in the Region of Murcia and the Generalitat Valenciana, in which we explain the uniqueness of these institutions dating to the Middle Ages .

The documentation consists of the application form and photographic and audiovisual documents.

The latter is divided into two parts: first the considered basic, consisting of 10 photographs and a short video, and secondly, the documentation consists of 30 photographs, an extensive video coverage of both institutions, including interviews and specialized books on the subject, and sound recordings.

Joint bid

The Board of Good Men of the Huerta de Murcia and the Tribunal de las Aguas de la Vega de Valencia, presented the joint bid under the name 'Courts of irrigators in the Spanish Mediterranean', in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of Unesco.

The Director General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, said today that "both institutions rooted in the garden of Murcia and Valencia are, over the centuries, examples of peaceful and sustainable management."

He also stressed that "oral traditions and expressions, their social practices, knowledge and practices concerning nature and traditional craft techniques are symbols of the culture of our land which must be preserved."

The Board of Good Men of the Huerta de Murcia is composed of seven members from the Community Board Watering Planters called the Huerta de Murcia, comprising 23,313 to 14,254 hectares belonging irrigators.

Among his responsibilities is to manage and distribute water to farmers in proportion to the needs of each.

For its part, the Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia consists of eight trustees elected democratically by the irrigation communities that take their water from the river Turia.

Both institutions are the only recognized customary and traditional courts by the Spanish legal system, in practice, is a special status that makes its decisions can not be appealed in the courts.
