Held on "Parking Day" in Murcia (21/09/2008)

Article submitted by the association Murcia Bike:

Park-ing Day is recovering from a legal and peaceful space for the car to turn for a few hours in a public garden micro.

On Friday, 19 took place in Murcia for the first time the park (ing) Day, a space for reflection on the use we make of our streets.

Looking for a parking space governed by the ORA, the removal of the ticket and instead of parking a co2che becomes a public space in a garden, which offers the opportunity for people to express that they want to do on the streets of their city, if more than 70% of outdoor space in cities was not dedicated to private vehicle pollutant, leaving only a small part for people.

The project Park (ing) Day comes early in 2005 when San Francisco (USA) Rebar Group (www.rebargroup.org) initiated a series of discussions on the use of public space in cities and the possible conversion of the same a site for artistic expression, political activism, and social experimentation.

The Parking Day was celebrated in cities like San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Munich, Paris, Valencia ...

The only public space reservation for cheap car parking is undoubtedly an increase in air pollution, noise and fuel overspending.

Murcia years in various groups of citizens are emerging as direct distribution of spaces in the city, no doubt believe it's time to rethink how we use our streets.

For this reason we wanted to propose a reflection on the use of common areas and the influence it has our lives and on the changes our city has experienced in recent years to articulate spaces for social change artistic expression, to help achieve streets that encourage a more sustainable city, respectful and egalitarian with room for everyone and are the principle of social change that we consider essential.

Therefore offered the opportunity on Friday who would like to express their opinion on our streets, that say what they would do there, so there were those who painted, others read, others played chess, others talked, there were children also created their space ...
