Study radiography health of students at the University of Murcia from a bio-psycho-social perspective (08/02/2016)

The University of Murcia (UMU) today introduced in the building of convalescence, a test that measures the health of their students from a bio-psycho-social perspective.

The study, which surveyed a thousand students, states that the perception of the health status of them is good, with an average score of 79.35 out of 100 on the scale of quality of life.

Most students (70%) were satisfied with their lives and have a positive self-image (67%), with high self-esteem, although up to 30% of them concerned issues of anxiety / depression.

The report, part of the project Healthy University and coordinated by Eva Herrera, professor of psychology at the University of Murcia, and Adelaide Lozano, of the Ministry of Health, also deals with the stress related to academic life.

In this section, the main sources of stress for students are, in this order, examinations, exhibitions classwork, academic overload and lack of time to fulfill the university obligations.

Surveys show that is quite stressed shown by the studies, 50%, but also very satisfied with studies courses, 93%.

Behaviors and lifestyles related to health, Professor Herrera stressed that 80% of respondents in the nomopeso and takes a minimum of four hours of exercise a week.

On the negative side, only half eat fruit and vegetables daily and almost half have tried to recognize any illegal drugs (cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy ...).

Students at the University of Murcia, is reflected in the report, they have an average overall quality significantly, highlighting strong points of the institution's professional competence and accessibility, resulting in the physical environment (issues such as furniture, ventilation and air conditioning classrooms) at least valued.

Another feature most appreciated by almost all students is academic and convivial atmosphere;

most appreciates the atmosphere of tolerance, non-violence and equality between men and women that dominates the campus.

The Vice Chancellor of Students, Quality and Equality, Miguel Angel Perez, has highlighted the extent of the sample and the bio-psycho-social approach to the project.

A presentation of the study were also attended by the rector of the University, José Orihuela, and the Minister of Health, Encarna Guillen.

The rector noted that the UMU is one of the founders of the Spanish network of healthy universities, which is dedicated to strengthening the institutions of higher education and environment health promotion.

"This study, he said, is further evidence of the importance of health for the University of Murcia, especially in the case of our students."

The counselor, who closed the ceremony, noting the collaboration of the University of Murcia and the Ministry of Health for the report, said it gives "the basis for undertaking health policies needed by the population."
