February 28, World Day for Rare Diseases (27/02/2015)

The Professor of the UCAM, Encarna Guillén, recently named 'Woman of the Year Murciana', participated in a conference on research into rare diseases

The Catholic University of Murcia held this morning a seminar on 'Structural bioinformatics and sequences', where they have exposed the main concepts and current trends in research and technology transfers to apply both computer science, mathematics, chemistry or computational biology to the discovery of new compounds that may have a beneficial application in the field of rare diseases.

The event was held on the occasion of World Rare Disease Day is celebrated on Saturday 28 February.

In the act have been involved member of the Research Group on Bioinformatics and High Performance Computing UCAM, Horacio Perez;

Professor at the University of Valencia, Alexander Neef;

and responsible for the creation of the unit of genetic Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca and Professor of Medical Genetics at the Catholic University of Murcia, Dr. Encarna Guillen, who has been chosen by the government of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia as 'Woman of the Year Murciana' in 'Awards March 8'.

During his speech, Encarna Guillén highlighted the research as "a fundamental part to advance the knowledge and care of patients with rare diseases."

He also noted as one of the objectives of the Chair directed the UCAM, conduct research to collect the patient needs "to then improve those aspects that have deficient".

He has said that, in that sense, is working on several research lines such as porphyria, in ectodermal dysplasia, in lipodystrophy, and disabilities which are also genetically based.
