"Bipolar disorder Van Gogh was unrelated to the genius of his work" (11/02/2015)

Existing knowledge of Vincent Van Gogh and documents that have survived to this day make it possible to draw a precise diagnosis of bipolar disorder affecting the Dutch paint.

He explains Francisco Toledo, psychiatrist Head of the University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca and professor at the University of Murcia, in a lecture in the auditorium of the UCAM: "We do medical records through the life of patients . Van Gogh gives us a twofold because we have a series of letters he wrote to his brother while he drew the canvases that marked an era, post-impressionism. Thanks to them we can establish a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. But I want make it clear that this diagnosis has nothing to do with the genius of the work he did. They could be mixed for a given time and what I try to highlight. "

On the incidence of this disease at present and possible treatments, Dr. Toledo commented that:.. "Bipolar disorder affects 2-3% of the population is always biological treatment and should be supported by the 'psychoeducation' The family and the patient should know that it is a cyclical disease, although the texts say it is chronic, occurring in phases, which are changed from one pole to another and for most of the time the patient is in normal state ".

Therefore, Toledo wanted to "tackle the stigma of having a disease like this and you can get far the disease has available" using the example of Van Gogh as one of the most important artists in history.
